Guns Don't Kill People, People Do

As I was reading articles on "Room for Debate," I came across an article about gun control, which really got me thinking about all the issues with shootings we've had in the past several years.

It is a tragic and uncomfortable situation to think about. School shootings, shootings in bars because of homophobic extremists, and random shootings in places like a movie theater. Just the thought of it makes me uneasy. After these kinds of events, many people get upset (which is expected) and say that we need to crack down on gun control. People believe that because guns are legal, that they result in people dying like this. Guns are not the reasons these people are dying, the person using the gun is the reason other people are dying. If someone came along and ran someone over, should we ban cars? Is it the cars fault that that person got run over? No, it is the persons choice to do that. People may also argue that guns are accessible enough for shootings to happen. While yes they are accessible, people would still be able to get them if they were banned or made illegal. Drugs aren't legal but you could find drugs quite easily if you knew where to look. What we should do is crack down on background checks and interviews when people are purchasing weapons, because many of the shootings are used by people who purchased and legally own the gun they used. What do you think? Should guns be banned completely?

  1. You make a really good point with the car example. This is something I hadn't thought of, but now I completely agree with what you're saying. Weapons are a HUGE problem, but there's plenty of other things that also cause tragic things to happen like a death in a car accident for instance. Regarding your question, I don't think guns should be banned completely, however I do think the little toy guns that kids play with should be banned. I really hate that a child has to lose their life over a toy that they were having fun with, but too many kids have been killed because of them. These toy guns aren't illegal and they are purchased by anyone.

  2. Many people legally own weapons for their personal safety and I don't think that should be outlawed. I do think that better background checks should be in place for people looking to buy weapons. Also, I think the kind of gun should be examined. You don't need an automatic weapon to protect yourself. Military grade weapons shouldn't be readily accessible to people with an unstable mind.

  3. People are the cause of violence and people are the ones who kill others. From conventional guns and knives to unconventional cars and baseball bats, pretty much anything can be used to harm another person. To blame the gun as the central cause of murder is like praising a baseball bat as the central cause of a great hit. It's ultimately the person who causes murder or connects a great hit. Gun control efforts should focus on the flawed background check system due to its significant loophole called the "Default Proceed." It lets gun buyers able to obtain a gun if a background isn't completed in a set time period. This greatly increases the chances of criminals and unstable persons to get a gun that would have otherwise been denied if the background check was completed on time.

  4. Guns should not be outlawed as I think that it would create an even bigger problem than what it is now. I feel that people would lash out and riot because the second amendment is still written in the Bill of Rights. The safest bet, in my opinion, would be to set an age at which people can legally own a gun and to increase the requirements for owning a gun.
