As I was going over the first book Amusing Ourselves to Death, a thought came to mind. There are many people today who care too much about "the next big thing". Our society is based on new trends and who is using them or not. Postman made quite a gripping statement about it in the first chapter,”Indeed, we may have reached the point where cosmetics has replaced ideology as the field of expertise […]” (4) Mocking the ways of the new world, he makes a good point. Why should our priorities revolve around our appearance rather than the daily news? Oh that’s right, no one would completely pay attention to their television screens unless there was a pretty lady or a clean-cut gentleman delivering the information to them.
I get what you're saying. As humans, I think we all yearn to have relationships with other humans so we do the best we can to relate to everyone. Our physical appearance is our first impression we make of ourselves, which sometimes determines who we are right away. I'm not trying to say we need to change our styles and dress the same as everyone but it's important to clean yourself up sometimes. If you don't stay up with the trends and make yourself aware then it becomes harder to connect with anyone. It's hard to have relationships if you have nothing in commmon with each other.
ReplyDeleteConformity is more well known to be a bad thing and it can be sometimes, but whether you are or aren't is up to you. We can't bash on everyone who is "basic" because some people actually do enjoy the more well known things. Why else does anything become popular? We fall into these trends, like you said, because we actually like them. Maybe I'm going off into a bunch of different directions than what you were trying to say but there are many different arguments on this subject.
I guess you have a good point there Halla. Maybe what I wrote came out differently than intended. No conformity isn't always a bad thing but based on what I know there are a lot of people in our generation that over uses it. There aren't that many original ideas anymore. For example, most of the movies that we watch today either came from a book or an older movie.
ReplyDeleteOkay, maybe I interpreted your post a little differently then but I think I get your point now. I wasn't trying to say people shouldn't embrace originality but many people are happy with the trends. So you're talking about people trying to start a trend or take credit for an idea that was based off of something else? I agree with you, I'm just making sure I understand now.
ReplyDeleteNot necessarily but you're on the right track. I was just judging the ways of today because I believe that we could do way better and attempt to put the phone down more often.
ReplyDeleteActually... that doesn't have to do with anything that I mentioned earlier.
ReplyDeleteI was discussing the actions of those who over use trends in their day to day lives. The "basic" people.
Don't get me wrong live how you want to live and don't let anyone put a stop to that.
DeleteI understand what you are saying Arielle. Society today uses technology as a crutch way too often. I think people spend too much of their time on social media instead of enjoying the people around them. If something happens, the first thing people do is take a video and see how many views they get instead of just living in the moment
ReplyDeleteExactly! Why can't most just live in the moment? I feel that it'd make a big difference.
DeleteThat's completely true. People are saying that one thing is cool one week and then is changes in the blink of an eye because someone "popular" is talking about or doing something. It's a pain in the butt, to be honest. Seeing and hearing all of these things everywhere is annoying and is holding society back and, as Sarah said, is using technology as a crutch.
