"They delude themselves who believe that television and print coexist, for coexistence implies parity" (28). I came across this quote while reading Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman. I disagree with Postman and do not think that people who think television and print coexist are deluded. People may not read as much printed material such as newspapers anymore, but I think that books are still popular and do coexist with television. In school, most if not all teachers use both the textbook and television to teach us. For example, in my history class last year, my teacher would talk about something that we read in the textbook, and sometimes after would show us a crash course to quickly go over what we just learned in a little bit more detail. Also, many people I know still read whether its for a class or for enjoyment. During school, I think people may read as much as they watch TV because of textbooks that are required to be a read or a book that was assigned by a teacher. Although the use of the television has increased, reading printed material still exists and now coexists with television.
I do agree television and print do coexist with one another. Many times teachers will refer to textbooks or even provide a video to further explain what they are trying to say. Also, many teachers who assign books to read in class will also show the movie in class to show the differences between the book and movie, and to also give the class a little more of a visual of the book. Even though it is true that people do not read as much as they watch they still coexist with one another.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement about the use of television increasing. Most of the people that I know watch two hours or more of television ( Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, etc.). I think that if some students were not forced to read then they would not read as much or not at all. With technology increasing there is less time for people to read as much as they used to.
