If I Were an Olympian...
The Rio 2016 Olympic Games started with the opening ceremony on this past Friday, August 5. I find the Games fascinating with the amount of skill, strength, speed, endurance, and athleticism that the athletes have and the amount of work they all put in to get there. As I was watching bits of it the last couple of days, I couldn't help but think about the scandals and dangers that have been associated with Rio. There have been Zika outbreaks, violent political demonstrations, organized crime, corrupt politicians, and even terror threats related to the city and to the Olympics. Those are all scary things to think about, and I would definitely want to avoid going to a place like that. However, I wonder what the athletes consider as they make their decision to attend the Games despite the potentially unsafe conditions. In their position, I think I would probably take the risk to compete because I would have to devote my entire life and enormous amounts of time and effort of training in order to get through the Olympic Trials and go on to the Games. I think if I was so physically and emotionally invested into something like that, I would be willing to take a risk to achieve my goals. What do you think you would do if you were to be an Olympic athlete?

ReplyDeleteIf I was in their shoes then I don't believe that I would be able to just give up. Especially when you take into account that they have made it through the trials and months of intensive training. However not only have they trained for this, but for most of them it has been a dream their entire life.
ReplyDeleteHow far would you go to follow your dreams?
I would definitely pull out of the Olympics even though it may be hard to give up on a dream. Living out one moment is not worth the consequences of possibly contracting the Zika Virus. I no doubt would abstain from the event which some Olympians already have done because of the Zika Virus and how it can easily be passed on to their wife. I would not think twice about dropping out of the event if it meant that my unborn child would be harmed. This is just very unfortunate for those who had to waste all that hard work and time they put to achieve their goals. You can always set new goals because the 2016 Rio Olympics to me simply is not worth the trouble.
ReplyDeleteI would stay true to what I trained for and compete in the Olympics. Many of those athletes have trained all their lives to have that one moment come and to have it taken away by fear is truly depressing. The Olympics are only every four years and so by the time the next Olympic games come many of the athletes now will be past their prime. It would be sad to lose a major opportunity like competing in the Olympics.
ReplyDeleteIt truly is a hard decision to make you either stay and complete what you have trained for or you leave to protect your health. For many people the Olympics is a big deal, not only will they be able to fulfill their dreams but they are also representing their country. It truly is hard to back out of a once in a lifetime opportunities like this one. If I were one of the athletes I wouldn't be sure on what to do.

ReplyDeleteIf I was an Olympic athlete, I would choose to stay in the Olympics because I would keep my health in faith. Many athletes dream of going to the Olympics and for me that is a dream I would trade for the world. However, I also feel that the people who choose to stay home are completely entitled to their opinion.
