"The lower the caste," said Mr. Foster,
"the shorter the oxygen" (14). This quote from Brave New World by Aldous Huxley really shocked me. It demonstrated
the horror of the caste system and its restrictive qualities on society. I
understood the reasons behind much of the society's ways, such as the creation
of unnatural "birth" or the use of the drug called soma, but what really disturbed me was
that quote about the shortening of oxygen. The lowest of the social class, the Epsilons,
were affected by this cruelty where they developed damaged brains and smaller
skeletal systems making them appear as dwarfs. What bothered me even more was
the confident and eager tone that Mr. Foster spoke in, as if gloating about
this "accomplishment."
What
do you guys think about the novel's caste system? Did you find anything as shocking
as this? If you could change on thing, what would you change about the society?
