No Pain, No Gain

While reading another classmate's post about happiness, as well as Huxley's Brave New World, I got to thinking. The people of the utopian society in Brave New World are not used to pain and sadness, which is why they constantly take soma. They are happy and content all of the time, or at least that's what they hope to be. At first, I thought the fact that they’re always happy was a cool thing about their society. Although, after much thinking, I don’t think it’s a good thing at all. I think we all need to feel pain and sadness once in awhile. I think being in pain or being sad teaches us that not everything in life is good nor will it make us feel good, and we just have to learn and deal with it. We have to be able to learn how to pick ourselves up when we’re down. I think that’s how we grow.
I personally used to hate being sad. I’d always want to be happy and whenever I realized wasn’t happy, I’d get even more upset. But then I learned that we aren’t supposed to be happy all of the time. As Julian Baker from One Tree Hill once said, “Happiness is a mood. It’s a condition, not a destination. It’s like being hungry or tired; it isn't permanent.”

Sometimes we become sad or feel pain and that’s okay. It’s okay to not be okay.

  1. It's rather humorous that your ideas remind me of that in "Inside Out". I say this because one of the main characters Joy tries to make her human host feel mostly happiness instead of letting the other character Sadness do her part. However, she doesn't really understand that her host must feel sadness in order to learn and grow. She didn't realize that her host, Riley, wasn't always going to be happy. This concept can be related to what you are saying about how you learned that sometimes you need to feel sad to learn how to pick yourself up and move on. In my opinion this is a very interesting topic as the human physcology interest me (fun fact). To conclude, I do agree with how you say that it's ok to feel sadness or pain at times and that happiness isn't permanent.

  2. I agree with what you're saying. There will be times in our lives when we experience sadness and we have to learn how to deal with these matters. The reality about life is as we grow older we experience different events in our life and we learn from them. Like you said Jasmine, this is how we grow because by facing reality we discover how the real world functions. Even though we have to deal with sadness it's normal to go through it because it's part of life.

  3. I personally believe we should always look for the positive things in life. I believe behind every bad moment or day is a lesson to be learned and that something greater is awaiting. However, I totally agree with you Jasmine, it's okay to not be okay, to have those bad days that make us go crazy because that is what makes us appreciate those moments of happiness even more. Like you mentioned before the pain is what makes us grow; as a good friend once told me, sometimes we have to hit rock bottom so we can come back up even stronger than before.
