Online Friends

While scrolling through some articles on the Room for Debate, I came across an article by Jazmine Hughes where she mentions that the internet can make real life friendships easier. She then explains her experience at a bookstore where she struck a conversation with someone she had approached and after a few minutes of talking they found some common interest between them. They later became friends on Facebook. In the article she points out that, "The web provides a space where the normal barriers to friendship  namely, the confusion about the appropriate way to start one  don't apply," which explains how the internet can help people make friends easier.

The internet has become a place to communicate and meet new people. During the past year I have met and talked to people from all over California because of the internet. The internet doesn't prevent people from making friends in person by face-to-face interactions but the internet makes starting a new friendship less awkward and more easier. Do you think the internet helps make friendships or is it all just fake?

  1. No, a bond is a bond. Friends can be made anywhere with today's technology. Sure it isn't all the same but it's an interaction between one person and another.

  2. I agree with Arielle, it matters what you do with people online who you call your friends that determine if they are true. Try and set up events and get togethers. This would really show the other person you really do want to be close to them.

  3. I have developed friendships over the internet with people who share the same interests as I do. If it is used properly, then yes genuine friendships can be made. It is all about how you interact with them and how willing you are to deepen your relations with that person.

  4. The internet truly does help in developing friendships especially with people who have the same interests. I have often come across many fan accounts for books and bands that I am interested in and have become friends with people who also follow those accounts. I feel like most friendships are genuine but it becomes hard to maintain them because of busy schedules or long distance. The best way you can establish a genuine friendship is by finding time to get together and always keeping in touch.

  5. Many of my friends have made friends over the internet bonding over their similar interests. I think that the internet helps make friendships, however, it depends on how much work an individual is willing to put into the friendship. In addition, I think that the friendship bond will be weaker over the internet because you won't be able to interact with them in person.

  6. I believe the internet is making my ability to make friends easier. As a person who does not leave the house that often, I use the internet to talk to my friends. I've met lots of friends using Twitter and Instagram and now know them in real life! If it wasn't for social media, I probably wouldn't have met them in the first place.
