The Driver's Distraction

I was searching for topics on "Room for Debate" and one that stood out to me was an article named, "Safer Alternatives for Drivers Who Text Are Just Around the Corner." It highlighted the fact that there are “safe” alternatives for driving such as “Siri” and other voice command systems that allows you to communicate without holding the phone. However, I feel like texting isn’t the real problem. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a problem because I get so uncomfortable when I’m in the passenger seat looking at the driver doing anything on their phone. However, another huge factor that should also be highlighted is the Snapchat distraction. This may be veering off the texting topic, but Snapchat is all I thought about while I was reading the article. Snapchat and driving is a huge problem as well. In fact, whenever I go on snapchat, which is every day, there is so many people that snap and drive. There is even a filter on the app that says “Do not snap and drive” and people purposely select that filter to be on their snap video or picture. Perhaps someone should make up an “alternative” for this app because it’s just as dangerous as texting and driving. Do you ever see anyone on your Snapchat driving while recording a video? I see it every day and it should stop.

  1. To answer your question, yes I do see people on snapchat while driving and its pretty unsatisfying. The use of snapchat has become more dangerous than texting itself. The reason people snap and drive is to make themselves look cool excusing themselves from the dangers it can cause not only to them, but to others as well. However, there are hands-free ways to use the app just by having someone else record you and enabling assistive touch in the settings of your phone if its an Apple IPhone.
