At the end of a semester, I do not believe that a student's grade should be based solely off of a final test. If a student has worked hard for half a year, then I think they deserve the grade that they have. Some see it as a final boost if you get a good grade on it; however, in many cases, a student with an A can get a B in the class all because they couldn't memorize 6 months worth of mere facts. I think that a student's work ethic should determine the grade that they receive in the class. Well, if not totally, then at least partly. Work ethic throughout the semester should be considered.

  1. I totally agree with you Sarah! A student's work ethic is very important to them and that is something they just need in college. When I read your post I started thinking about college applications and how you portray yourself through them. From many of my friends who graduated high school last year, they tell me that colleges look at everything and grades is just one part of it. A semester grade does not define you as well as a GPA. Students work excruciatingly to get their grades where it needs to be for college applications. It is the effort students put in their work that characterizes them, not a letter.

  2. I also agree with both of your statements about work ethic. This reveals the same thing for students who do not try as hard as those who do in class. They usually put little to no effort in the class/homework and still somehow pass with a C or a D. And what bothers me is that they suddenly just put in the effort during the last moments as the semester ends. By doing that, they get a higher grade during finals. When something like this happens, I think it is unfair for the students who work hard and complete their assignments throughout the whole semester and school year. I believe that a student's work ethic should really be considered because whatever grade you receive at the end of a semester cannot define the hardships you have gone through in the duration of that time.
