Should Schools Teach Creativity?

The last weekend essay we did focused on people's lack of creativity and asked for solutions to the issue. One solution was if schools should have a class where they teach students how to be creative. Honestly, I do not think that is a good solution because creativity is something everyone has. There should not need to be a class on how to be creative. If anything, making one class for creativity is like saying you only need to be creative for an hour out of the day. Children should be taught at an early age to always think outside of the box. Yes, there are some subjects that require only one solution, but some classes should welcome new ideas as much as possible. It does not always have to be getting an answer that no one has, but making colorful assignments or giving projects with different themes also help. Lastly, encouraging students to take art, theater, and music classes seems like a good enough solution - playing a sport helps kids release stress as well. Children should care about receiving good grades, but there should be equal concern for pursuing what interests them. I feel that by encouraging more free-thinking in classes and reminding kids to do what they like will help them come up with help them to be more open-minded as adults.

Do you think creativity is a subject that should be taught? Would it be beneficial?

  1. I do not necessarily think creativity should be a legitable course. However, I do agree with you Sofia where you mentioned that it should be implied to how teachers teach their students. As I mentioned in a recent blog post, everybody learns differently from each other. For some it could be music that will help them remember information or a certain hobby. But being able to think differently is not only important but it is also become essential to our rapidly advancing society. We need innovative thinkers to fulfill many careers in the future. But first to become an innovative thinker, we must first be creative thinkers.

  2. I agree that teaching a class based of "teaching creativity” as a waste of time because everyone here knows that there is going to be a group of students who will only take that class for an easy A. Instead Mayfair should be encouraging more students to take classes such as art or band so our future has a chance of being more creative to help solve problems such as global warming or dealing with terrorist.

  3. In my opinion, having a class like that would be probably very helpful, especially if someone is interested in a job that requires planning and sharing ideas. Yes, I believe that installing a class like this would be beneficial not just to a person, but to a job or business as a whole because the person will be taught to be innovative. It gives people a chance to think in another way that can one day be useful for this world.

  4. Instead of a class "teaching creativity," there should be classes that allow for creativity to be expanded on. I don't think creativity can be taught. It can be learned, but not taught. There should be classes that allow for this: art, music, etc.

  5. I don't think creativity should be taught in classrooms because students already have the capability to be creative. It wouldn't be very beneficial to the students taking the class because teaching how to be creative takes the whole meaning of creativity out of context. Students just need to be placed in an environment where creativity can flow for them to start thinking creatively. Like you said, I agree that students should be encouraged to take classes like art and music because it will help everyones' creative "juices" flow.
