How Creative Are You?

Take a moment to reminisce on your early years. Do you remember how creative we used to be? From making imaginary friends, giving inanimate objects (such as dolls or action figures) personalities, jumping across furniture because "the floor was lava"...  Heck, if someone asked our younger selves to draw a brand new invention to fix-- let's say-- global warming, we could probably come up with a creative doodle within minutes. What happened to this once-natural ability?

I would assume that a lot of us can agree that school has taken a toll on our creative abilities (I'm sure that video Ms. Fletcher showed us convinced us all that our creativity has been tampered with). In fact, that video really opened my eyes, and I never noticed how much grades shaved my creativity from fat to lean. To those of you that are dominated by AP classes: Do you have free time to be creative along with the loads of homework you are assigned?

Here are some questions to consider:

  • How creative do you all consider yourself to be?
  • Do you want to nurture this ability back to its full potential, or do you not really care?
  • Do you have a method to harnessing creativity?
  • In what ways do you feel school has taken a toll on your creative outlet? (Or do you think school hasn't affected this ability at all?)

  1. Oh jeez. I was VERY creative when I was younger let me tell you that. Heck, I would even make inanimate objects (and I'm talking very inanimate as in a car or a Q-tip) talk as if they were spontaneous characters in a crazy novel. Of course, as I grew older those kinds of things seemed dumb and I grew more accustomed to doing more serious things like homework and research papers. The truth is, I really did lose that sense of creativity which is only revived when I'm doing some form of art. I sometimes wish I could go back to the times when I would play with my toys and just enjoy life without a worry. I was once a dreamer and I still am, but not as much and I would like to reach that full potential again. That's why I take artsy classes in school.

  2. Hey Nina, reading your post actually made me realize how growing up in the American education system actually makes people loose their sense of creativity. Looking back, I used to be so much more creative than I am now.

  3. I was way more creative when I was younger. As of now, however, I feel like I am not very creative, and I want to gain this ability back to its full potential. A method I have noticed that allows me to harness creativity is when I am doing something productive with no time constraint such as cleaning my room. Doing so, creative ideas come to mind. However, school has somewhat strained my ability to be creative, for there isn't enough time in a day, for me at least, to nurture my creativity.

  4. Yes! When I was younger my creativity was at its climax. At one point I was taking interest in subjects such as art and the creation of things. In elementary school, I was able to attend things such as chorus and art activities. These helped me motivate myself to try some of these activities at home. However, high school hit and things went down hill. I began to stop focusing on the things I found interesting and more on the things I need in order to graduate from high school and meet the A through G requirements for college. ;c I cant wait until i get to take ceramics, but I really wish I could get the chance to take introduction to health. I actually want a career in the medical field, but the class does not fix into my schedule. Lucky me right?
