Money Problems

For the essay Fletcher assigned us on education recently, I chose number 2 which is as follows: Using the text in this conversation on the American high school, as well as your own insights in to high school, Identify two serious problems with the education system, and purpose recommendations for addressing them. Cite at least two sources from the conversation in your response.

I of course brought up one of the biggest issues: money. I wanted to talk on here to talk more specifically about Mayfair. I do not think I am the only one who thought that those "Soons" banners around school was a waste of money. Our school could have spent that money on the AC in the gym, or for the soap in bathrooms that does not seem to exist. I know I do not know how schools spend money, but I do know that money should be spent on the students' benefit.

(Honesty, who thought those banners where useful!?)

Is there anything you guys think that was a waste of money? I love my school don't get me wrong, but c'mon I'm not the only one that sees this right?

  1. I too, did prompt two and my arguments of the education system were money, and not a well enough education to benefit a student after school. But to talk about the money part, I agree with you completely. In my essay, I talked about that schools care mostly about a students test scores because schools get paid depending on this. I explained that this is not how a school system should be; training students to pass these tests when in reality, being a good test taker doesn't determine someones intelligence.

  2. I remember seeing those banners when we came back to school and wondered why the school even bothered to get them. They could have used that money for something actually beneficial instead of getting super nice banners and hang them up at our old looking school where they look out of place. I wish the school would use the money for something for beneficial to the school as a whole, instead of things that have no real purpose or benefit to the student body or even the staff.

  3. I agree, most of the time our school doesn't use the money they receive wisely. Although the banners are supposed to bring "school spirit" to the school they aren't the most efficient way to spend our money. I agree that the money should've been spent on something important such as AC or soap in the bathrooms. Schools, Mayfair in particular, need to do a better job of managing their money wiser and spending it on what is essential for the school.
