The education system doesn't prepare us
It came to my attention that the education system is really flawed. It does not prepare us for life after high school. In the article Let Teenagers Try Adulthood, the author Leon Botstein talks about all the different flaws that the typical American high school has. One major flaw that he focuses on is the fact that high school does not prepare students for adulthood. Botstein really puts emphasis on the cliques that from in high school and explains how they are the reason why students are not prepared. He explains that when there are cliques everyone is just following along with what everyone else is doing instead of doing their own thing and being independent which makes them less prepared for life after high school and adulthood. Botstein also states that the people that are outsiders in high school are more successful in life after high school because they were independent during high school causing them to be prepared to make their own decisions. Therefore, the education system is very flawed and does not prepare us for our lives after high school.

It's not the education systems fault that these cliques form throughout high school. Groups of people form on their own, with or without high school. Also, even though there are multiple cliques in high school that doesn't mean that students are unprepared. I argue that these popularity or athletic groups are irrelevant, and it is not a reason for the flaws in American school systems. I can guarantee that wanting to fit into a group in high school is not a student's main priority. Students can care less about wanting to be like everybody else and following other peoples lead, or at least that is how I feel. In reality, high school students aren't trying to be somebody they are not. they are just trying to do well in school and succeed.

ReplyDeleteI understand your point of view Emily; however, I don't agree with the fact that the formation of cliques are the reasons for the flawed education system. Cliques are simply groups of kids that come together do to similar interests, or similarities. Also, within these cliques a teens independence isn't necessarily hampered due to it. For instance, during the track season I tend to hang out alot with the track team outside of practice. Hanging with this specific athletic group hasn't changed my independent nature; I simply have the same interest and bond with a group of people. The point is, cliques don't influence the education system, the system is simply flawed, outdated, and needs to be modernized to be more applicable for students today.
