Not all about tests

I don't think that school should be so heavily dependent on a student's performance on tests at the end of the semester. There have been many cases where I've heard about someone who did all their work all semester long, didn't do so good on the semester test, and their grade was tremendously dropped because of it. I believe that if a student works hard all the way up until the semester test and maintains an A, then they deserve that A. Tests are pretty much just memorization of a bunch of facts, and at the end of half a year, there is an overly amount that we as students need to know to get at least a decent grade in the class. I think that a grade should be based off of the students' participation and their consistent work ethic.

  1. I agree, a test doesn't define the person who takes it. It should be based on how the student has performed over the course of the semester.

  2. I mostly agree with you Sarah. Students that have worked hard to maintain a good grade should not be dropped if they do poorly on a semester test, especially if it requires them to remember months of information. On top of that, other classes have finals as well, so a student cannot possibly be expected to remember all past information for each class. As long as they worked hard, I feel they should end with what they deserve. Still, there are students who do not have very good grades and sometimes they hope that if they study really hard for their last test, it will possibly bring them up a letter grade. If that is the case, I feel that the semester final could be beneficial to some. It still is seems unfair if they get bumped up when they decided to wait for the last test to start trying. But I feel that even if it is the last minute, if they did well on that one test because they worked for it they should get some of a boost. For those who worked hard throughout the year, they should be graded on their hard work and participation and not by a bad score on one test. For example, there are some students who work very hard and ask many questions, but they still do poorly. Despite not doing well, their hard work should be accounted for. Maybe not as much as those who work hard and receive good grades, but they should be given some points for their participation.
