Appearance is Everything!

In Amusing Ourselves to Death, Postman talks about the advice that late president, Richard Nixon gave former U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy, in the event of him running for presidency, which was simply, " Lose twenty pounds."(4) The fact that someones' appearance plays a part in them becoming the President of the United States is ludicrous. People, Americans in particular, no longer choose their leaders based on significant characteristics such as being able to better the country, and actually help people.

I find that we are in an endless cycle of stupidity. We chose people to do jobs that they are unqualified for, and then we complain that they are not doing their jobs correctly. The fact that we want people to appear flawless is absurd. I would rather have a president that is not so appealing to the eye who does their job correctly, rather than a gorgeous one who is cancerous to the country.

All in all, we as the people should reevaluate our priorities, and not judge a person and their abilities based off of their physical appearances.

  1. I agree people today are simply choosing people to jobs based on their appearance, their qualifications for the job hardly matters if they have the looks and the charm. If people would stop looking at the persons appearance and more at the persons capabilities we would have more qualified people doing a better job.

    1. I agree with what you mean when you say people should not be evaluated by their appearance, but at the same time, appearances matter. You don't just show up to a job interview in a tshirt and jeans. First impressions are based on looks and how you present yourself. Do you seem like a nice, charmful person that's easy to work with, or are you someone who's stubborn and hard to work with? People look at you first and judge you by your appearance. They evaluate your characteristics and who you are second.

Also, qualifications for a job do matter, even if they have the looks and charm. Someone isn't going to hire you just because you showed up to an interview in a suit and you're a funny guy. Like I said before, your appearance matters, and that also means your appearance on paper matters. You're not going to get a job that calls for a doctorate with a highschool diploma.

  2. Likewise to what you blogged, Anitrius, I do agree with you on the idea of appearance being a common aspect of whether or not someone thinks negatively or positively of you. In fact, since a person's appearance is the first thing we see, we are very accustomed to making our judgement in the most simplest terms possible. For example, people make their judgments based on race, religion, or sexuality etc.. However, if we shift through this judgmental perception of others, then we will have a clearer view of who and what a person is truthfully.

    1. Adding to what Lavanton said, our first impression on a person is usually based off of their looks before we can even say a single word to them. Our natural instinct to judge someone based off of their looks is something that ruins our perspective of that persons true personality. Now we may not always judge a person by their looks but, we occasionally see a person with a not so nice "resting face" and immediately think that person is mad or not approachable. So I do agree that we should not be basing someone off of their appearance.

    2. I'm not saying a person should be judged based on their appearance only, but how you present yourself also matters. We shouldn't make judgments based entirely on looks, but we should keep in mind how a person is when we first see them. An example would be the type of company they keep or the first actions they make when we first see them. I believe appearances do matter, but they should only be a piece of how you judge a person, rather than judging them entirely by their appearance.

  3. Ken I understand what you are saying, but I am specifically speaking on certain characteristics such as someone's size or whether they are good-looking or not rather than how they carry themselves. Maybe I should have went into further detail in what I meant.

  4. I can see where Ken is coming from, I do also agree that when you are going to start a job, you do want to make a good impression. Now Anitrius, I do agree with you. I do think that just because you aren't the same as anyone else, you shouldn't be mistreated. For example, I'm just being cliché here, but what if we have a group of cheerleaders that are looking for new members to recruit and they are looking for perfect, skinny, white pearly teeth girls who have money...hm...one girl walks in and she is neither of those things. Instead of saying okay you did well, they all bash on her. My point is that defining who you are isn't always about the looks. It's all about personality. I felt like a rambled a little bit, but I had to say what I needed to say.
