Conformity

In the society of Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, everyone is expected to act a certain way and live their lives as it is, happily with no complaints. When a character does not act like this or does not follow the status quo, they are frowned upon and looked at differently, as if there was something wrong with their state of mind. In one instance, a non conformist is looked at like an animal in the zoo and is a source of entertainment for the citizens. They try to "fix" people like this by giving them drugs, so everyone can once again be happy. This reminds me, in a way, of our society. While it may not be quite as extreme, we still frown upon those who are different and label them as strange or freaks. It makes me wonder if one day our society will be this extreme to those who are different and how it will be dealt with.

  1. I completely agree with what you're saying. I think our society has a tendency to discriminate or ignore what we don't understand.

  2. I 100% agree with your statement. People should believe in what they want to believe and people not be frowned upon or discriminated. It is sad that people who are different and stand out are judged.

  3. As the others have said, I agree. Society points out all the differences and shows them as wrong and makes it seem bad. It's quite a surprise when there isn't a mean comment about a person or thing being different.

  4. I somewhat agree with your statement. From a certain point of view, life can seem this way. Although, someone from a different background may have a different point of view. The world is very large and the United States and California is a very small part of the world in the broad spectrum. In other places, this way of life may not be the same. I agree that it is unfortunate how some people frown upon differences, but it unlikely that a generalized statement can cover everything.

    1. Randy makes an excellent point because our society in America isn't like the other societies in the world. Some of the people were raised to frown upon other because of their differences while other people were raise to respect and try to understand new things that they encountered. Our culture today sadly is the society that was raised to fear the unknown and judge it. Other societies out there aren't like us because they want to understand the unknown and want to see how other people's ways are. That is why I too somewhat agree with Heather's argument because not every society and culture labels people who are different. Some cultures do but you can't just generalize that our future might turn out to be like a Brave New World where they go to the extreme in treating people who different. There are just too many societies, cultures, and places that keeps the world diversed and different from one another. The day we become exactly the same as one another (same culture, language, beliefs, etc) is the day our future might become extreme but until then, I don't think our future will treat people who are different like the society we see in a Brave New World.

  5. I understand where you are coming from Heather; however, I would find it ironinc if our society were to drug those who were different. Considering this is America, the only society that I've been exposed to, that represents its self as a nation that excepts many different people. So I say it would be ironinc because whether we belive it or not our society has projected how people should be. Let's not bat around the bush, it (American society) has portrayed many standards and one of them happens to be beauty. So for our society to reach the level, in which, Aldous Huxley portrayed it would be satirical; considering, this is the nation of the free. Free to be different and unique.

  7. I strongly believe that people should be how they see fit. To think that there are some out there who look down on those who try to just be themselves is sickening. Finding our place in society is apart of growing up and to be shot down and frowned upon is damaging to one's self esteem. There can be major backlash when a person is looked down upon. People need to be more tolerant and encourage individualism within a person.
