Should Guns Be Allowed on College Campuses?

It seems almost common nowadays to see news stories or headlines recounting incidents having to do with gun violence. While looking over articles on Room for Debate, I came across a particular article having to do with guns on college campuses. The article, “Should Guns Be Permitted on College Campuses?” was about states allowing students and faculty to carry concealed weapons, not only on university grounds, but also inside university buildings and classrooms. I could not imagine walking into class and seeing my professor, along with other students, carrying lethal weapons.

Some of the debaters on the site claimed that university police are unable to prevent violent crimes, and therefore, it is up to individuals to defend themselves, but I simply cannot see how more weapons can result in a higher level of safety. One of the debaters, Nelson Lund, also made statements claiming that people who have gun permits are responsible enough to provide a safe environment for students; this made me question whether all people who posses gun permits are responsible enough to handle guns. I decided to research the matter and found that 80% of guns used in mass shootings were obtained legally; clearly contradicting Lund’s statement.

Instead of allowing more guns on college campuses, I believe that colleges should invest on  better security measures such as having more university policemen and having BlueLight, a system many colleges are using to ensure the safety of their students. If a student or faculty member feels that they absolutely need a weapon to keep themselves safe, then I would suggest that they should get a non-lethal weapon like a taser or a stun gun.

  1. I agree, guns shouldn't be allowed on college campuses, especially after all these shootings that have been happening it seems like a mistake to allow students and teachers to carry guns onto campus grounds. Like you said, altough these people have these guns legally, most shootings occur with legally obtained firearms, and allowing them on campus would only make it easier for these people to create another school shooting.

  2. i agree that guns should not be allowed on college campuses. I know as a person with anxiety students and professors carrying around would only make my anxiety worse. I believe that its the job of the on campus security to keep students safe.

  3. In my opinion, the problem lies within the United States' second amendment: the right to bear arms. I find that this amendment is abused throughout the country, and is even controversial in the fact that it is one of the main sources for school shootings. Firearms, whether small or big, should be harder to obtain than simply stating, "I need one."

You also stated that smaller weapons should be allowed on campus in place of guns. This should not be true, however, as the campus is a place of learning, not violence. There should be no weapons on campus at all, regardless of how unsafe the students or teachers feel.

    1. I agree with Michael that our gun control issues are because of the government. However I also agree with Eduardo, schools should not ban all weapons from school. Weapons are defined as the following: a means of defending oneself in a conflict. Pepper spray can be considered a weapon but it does not end lives. Yes school is a place for learning, but with one in 5 women and one in 16 men being sexually
assaulted while in college and with more than 90% of sexual assault victims on college campuses not reporting the assault, some form of protection should be allowed in schools.

  4. I agree that guns should not be allowed onto college campuses, for they cause more harm than good. For instance, on the news we see school shootings that occurred and have killed many innocent people. The culprit is usually a person who obtained a gun and brought it onto the school campus without campus security knowing. Furthermore, I agree with improving campus security to ensure that those on school grounds are kept safe from those who want to cause harm via firearm.

All in all, guns should not be allowed onto a school campus regardless if they are regulated. However, if people on the school campus feel like they need to be able to protect themselves they should be able to, as Eduardo and Catalina stated, with non-lethal weapons such as pepper spray, a taser, and etc.

  5. I agree about your claim to get a stun gun or a taser. I do not think people, especially college students, are responsible enough to have a gun and NOT fire it. If someone has one, then it's just a matter of time before it goes off purposefully or accidentally. But either way it will go off. It's like giving candy to a child and telling them that they can't eat it. Of course the child's eventually going to.

  6. I also agree that college campuses or any school for the matter should not allow guns, especially in today's society. Just like Sarah said, not every college student is resposible enough to carry or shoot a gun. It's just that one little mistake that will turn your whole world upside down. Some people abuse the guns and especially the younger generation, they think it's cool to have guns or any type of weapon just because it makes them look more mature or scary. I also agree that maybe having security carry around a tazer or pepper spray would be a reasonable self-defense item.
