Technology Will Not Ruin Us!
After finishing Amusing Ourselves to Death, I can honestly say I did not enjoy reading it. Mostly because I'm not a big fan of nonfiction, but this book did not give me one ounce of enjoyment. I would rather be reading a fiction book that can take me to another world or bring out my imagination. Something that is entertaining to me. Something that can take me away from reality. Kind of like how television or technology does for me and many other people. Throughout the entire book, Postman mainly talks about how television and technology is a bad thing and humans are slowly being corrupted by it. Many people on this blog seem to think that technology will somehow ruin our lives in the future too. So what? It takes us away from reality for a little bit so we can enjoy ourselves. It's not like we will forget to live our lives and go out to have fun because of technology. I know I won't. Technology has more pros than cons. I don't know about everybody else, but I learn a lot from watching a tv show or movie. Whether it be a unique word or a life lesson. I always find myself learning when technology is involved. Sure, everywhere you go you see tons of people on their phones, but that doesn't make them automatically obsessed with their phone and technology. Look where that person is, they are out doing something. Doesn't that count for anything? They may be on their phones for a bit, but at least they are out of the house and interacting somehow. Technology isn't as bad as everybody is putting it out to be. It just makes the world easier to live in.

I am stuck on chapter 2 only because I just don't enjoy reading the book. I know that I have to read this book for homework, but it pains me!
ReplyDeleteAll of what postman is saying so far I have understood, but don't really agree with. I agree wth what you're saying that so what if technology is taking over people's lives and that yes it does have more pros and cons. I guess I have to pull through with this assignment and keep on reading!
I agree with everything you've just said. Too many people on this blog seem to believe that technology will take over our lives and kill social interaction. Have you heard of the "Thomas Edison was a witch" joke? This is exactly that. It has not and it will not consume our lives unless we let it. Of course there are people with an addiction to the internet or other electronics, but those people probably already had traits that made them more susceptible to be addicted, and there will always be people who are addicted to something.
ReplyDeleteWe created technology to help us in our daily lives. The purpose of technology is to make our lives easier, and it's doing exactly that.
I agree with what you're saying and do believe technology and the internet make our lives better. Many people on this blog are saying technology is bad for us, yet do they not know that they're using technology as of that moment to write the blog post or comment? With everything in live of course there are pros and cons but if you use any sort of technology properly then there shouldn't be that many cons.
ReplyDeleteFurthermore to Ken's comment, yes there are people with addition to the internet and electronics but there is so many more people in the world addicted to much worse things. The internet is the least of our problems.
It makes it easier to communicate, to share with millions of people, and a form of entertainment across the world.
I agree with all of you. I do feel that technology has changed many lives out there and it has given people a different perspective in life whether it goes to music, movies, reading, and of course blogging. Giving the people to say what is on their minds and what technology these days can do is extremely incredible. How could one function without technology? If one says that technology doesn't make them happy, then they are wrong. For example, cameras, where will you be without those silly faces you make when a serious photo is trying to be taken? It's also a great way to communicate, as Jainah said. Also, like Natalie said, you do see a lot of people out and on their phones, but that doesn't mean they are "obsessed." Maybe they would like to share what they are doing with the world while feeling good about it.
ReplyDeleteI somewhat agree with these statements. Overall, technology allows humans to do things faster than before the internet. For example, where would we be without calculators with a trig function? Technology does speed up human life overall everything and is a very useful tool.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the views of addiction to the internet and phones, as there are many people addicted to worse things. Personal traits and overall value of the device to the person equates to the difference of overuse or using it responsibly.
I would like to point out that there are reasons humans have other emotions other than happiness and "feel-good" emotions. The emotions are here so when we undergo suffering or general unhappiness, we can sympathize, relate, and help those who are in a time of struggle within their lives. I agree how using technology can be used as an outlet to provide time away from reality, but in reality there are much more outlets than the internet, phones, and computers. This is why many great jazz artists produce the unique and emotional music they played because they used jazz improvisation as an outlet. I do not entirely disagree with the statements provided by others, but instead providing another look at these views and opinions.
I agree with what you are saying because technology does make our everyday lives a little easier and as technology keeps improving it helps make our lives even easier. I agree with what you said about people not necessarily being "obsessed" for looking at their phones because they could've been looking for directions or checking a message. Everyone has a different reason for being on their phones such as an emergency. Although there will be a few people who are "obsessed" with technology, most people enjoy physical interactions and living their lives as much as they like checking their phones. I know I'd much rather be outside doing something then being "stuck on my screen." Adding on to Jainah's statement, technology does make it easier to communicate. With the invention of phones and computers, people can communicate with someone five thousand miles away.
