Artificial Intelligence
While reading the debate "Does AlphaGo Mean Artificial Intelligence Is the Real Deal?" I found myself not liking the idea of artificial intelligence and over advanced technology. I am not comfortable with the idea that robots and technology could overtake human interaction. In our lives today I fear that technology could take over our lives. On Saturday my family and I went to the mall and I found that many people were on their phones and not paying attention to their surroundings. An example in my own family I was having a conversation with my sister while we walling around she stopped because she said there was a "Charmander" near by on her "Pokemon Go" app and she had to catch him and was unable to continue our conversation. I am worried that the advancement of technology could interfere with human interaction. My point is that while technology is good in moderation too much could be harmful to humans.

Good morning Jaymee, I completely agree with you, technology nowadays is quite scary. In fact, a lot of times it feels as if we (the people) are in a slow progression to becoming like the characters in Wall-E. However, don’t get me wrong our technology is very helpful but I believe it’s more useful in moderation, especially in terms of social media. For example, over the weekend my cousin and I were talking about how our other cousin was so addicted to social media. It was as if as soon as we walked in the house her head was down and her fingers were clicking away on all of her social outlets. We tried talking to talk to her but not once did she seem to get the clue to put her phone down and interact with us, and after a while we gave up. I completely understand your worry in the advancement of technology. I feel like the more it advances the more dependent we become towards it; resulting in, laziness and our lack as humans to casually interact with each other face to face. Nonetheless, hopefully more people will wake up and understand the toll advance technology can have on us, and to learn how to balance being social on media and with people.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with both of your points. Technology has taken a sort of mind control over our bodies, even to the point where we do not realize it at all. I think we have allowed technology to take over so much of our daily lives that it has made us so dependent on it. How many times have you heard people complain about being bored because their internet is down or they do not have their phone with them. If we don't balance technology and reality like Sydairee mentioned, our future will be a world where advanced technology controls everything. Don't get me wrong though, some technology is good for society as advancements in it has help so much people in the world. But the day we blend the lines between technology and the actual reality that is in front of us, our world will be what Jaymee is worried about, a world where human interaction is controlled by the advanced technology we have created.
DeleteI as well find myself feeling a bit uncomfortable with how much technology has progressed. It seems as if people are shutting themselves off from the real world in favor of a digital one. With release of virtual reality headsets, I fear that we will soon live our lives in a world not our own. With the case of the Pokémon Go, it's a bit strange to me. While at the park, I saw about thirty or so people playing the game instead of being active and enjoying the park. The thing that baffled me was that these people were interacting with each other and bonding over what they did in the game. People who have never spoken a word to each other before suddenly became friends. With things like this app, maybe technology advancements wont be so bad after all.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you, Heather. Technology is heading towards a better path than stated by Jaymee. In fact, I think that this "Pokemon GO" app is actually benefiting our society. One time, while I was out hunting for Pokemon, I encountered a so called "Lure Party," where one person uses a "Lure" to attract nearby Pokemon and several people with it. The interesting thing was, no one knew each other in this group--they were all strangers to each other. However, they all laughed and caught Pokemon together, as they were brought together under a single cause: to catch Pokemon. My point is, current technological advancements are to benefit humans, whether it is to help aid our social lives as is portrayed by Pokemon GO, or for entertainment, such as the virtual reality headsets that you mentioned.
DeleteTo address Jaymee's fear of artificial intelligence, technology has not yet progressed to the point where AI can properly talk to people, let alone take over the world. This will most likely be the case for a very long time since Artificial Intelligence is fairly new.
I can see your point about this new Pokemon game benefiting our society by making people get out of their homes and interact with other people Michael, but I agree with Jaymee on this topic. This app proves that technology does in fact control people. As more and more people download this game, the founders (people behind the game) can access the player's location and 'force' them to go outside, and by outside I mean not an intent to enjoy nature, but rather manipulate them to catch these creatures. It may be seen as a good thing since this app is benefiting people by going outside for a walk, but it can also support the fact that this app is controlling us. For instance, recently there was an incident in Massachusetts consisting of a 26 year old who stopped his vehicle while driving on the freeway to 'catch Pikachu'. His negligence lead to a major freeway accident. I am afraid that this is a crucial example of what society today has become due to these technologies.
DeleteIn this case, my opinion leans a little more toward Michael's argument than Jaymee's and Brianna's, but I would like to point out that a lot of the technologies that are being discussed in this blog require moderation and judgement. Most of the arguments against specific technologies here refer to very extreme cases involving excess and bad decision making. Pokémon Go can help friends and strangers go outside and actually talk to each other, but but players need to be aware of their surroundings, as advised on the game's loading screen that is shown every time the game opens. Social media can help distant friends and family keep in touch, but it can also cause people to shut themselves inside if used in excess. I think the problem is that only the extreme and negative cases are the ones that make the news

DeleteI agree with Jacob and Michael. Technology and apps like Pokemon Go have helped people go outside and socialize, making new friends in the process. Pokemon Go allowed for Michael to meet and interact with people he might have never thought of talking to. Of course, an excess of either technology and social media can't be good. There will always be extreme cases like the 26 year old on the freeway, but as long as there is moderation and decent judgement, technology has no negative effects.
DeleteMichael, Jacob, and Ken couldn't have said it any better. Pokémon Go is bringing people together and taking them to new places. If technology is knitting together a community, then maybe it isn't that bad after all. The point of the game is to get people to explore the world around them, which the creators have stated several times. They even created a power saving mode that only activates when rotating the phone upside down, as if to put it in a pocket or something(therefore, getting the player to look up from the screen). In a situation like the man stopping in the middle of the freeway to catch a Pikachu, I don't think the technology is at fault. The user is at fault. Sadly, we can't do much about the poor decisions some users are making. We can only hope for the best. Moreover, I think technology is beneficial for someone that has self control. I agree with Ken when he says that technology has no negative effects when there's moderation and good judgment.

DeleteWhile reading these comments, both sides for the use of Pokemon GO and technology in general have been well stated. Technology is a tool, and tools are neither good nor bad, it is how they are used. Just as similarly a chainsaw is very useful for chopping down trees and branches, but a chainsaw is very malicious and deadly when used to harm other humans. I have not heard about the 26 year old driver causing the freeway accident until this blog, but from my understanding he was using his phone while driving which is unarguably against the law and is dangerous for the neighboring cars, regardless of what he was doing on his phone. On the other hand, people like Michael and other users have a community where they can meet people, make friends, and do a social activity. I agree that this act can also limit a person's outside activity to strictly playing Pokemon GO, but some people have other activities they enjoy outside. Technology and specifically Pokemon GO have the potential to be good or bad, it is up to the user to decide.
DeleteI agree that advancements in technology is quite worrisome. Because technology is quite ingrained in today's society, I feel as if these advancements in technology open doors to human interaction that can be both good and bad. With apps like Pokemon Go, the app helps those using it meet new people and also helps people socialize about common interests such as catching Pokemon. However, I can see how the app can be viewed as bad especially with incidents like people stopping traffic to catch Pokemon. Incidents like that, however, are usually caused by lack of judgement and poor choices.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, advancements in technology in places like factories have almost diminished human interaction by replacing workers with machines. Though machines are efficient, people now are being replaced by these machines leaving them unemployed and left to find a new job.
I understand where you mean that some forms of technology can ruin our social lives and us human beings. But as many people also said, the technology we had today helps us live and communicate with each other. Social media can not only help me but others to talk to friends instantly, even family.
ReplyDeleteNow as technology becomes more and more advanced it has begun to take over jobs and people in factories. Hopefully in not many cases, as now people are being unemployed. I know many people would not want to interact with a machine, for example unwound not want to go to the store and be piloted by a robot. I would want to talk to a physically human being.
I actually find myself interacting with people more then ever before. I also seem to be going out more often then usually so for me I see it as a good thing. I don't believe it controls me since even if I'm with my friends or family I don't find myself ignoring them in order to catch a Pokemon.
