In Aldous Huxley's Brave New World there is a class system set in place to keep peace and order. I can understand what the classes are in the system, how the people are placed into the classes, what each class is meant to do in society, and how these people are kept in their classes. The one thing that I don't understand is why this system is being used in their society, why did they choose to use this class system and how did they start to use it? I have read five chapters of the book and I am not sure if I have passed the part of the book where they explain this and I just didn't notice, or is it still farther ahead in the book?
This is still a vary interesting book, I can't get myself to put it down at times, this one thing is just bugging me and i can't get it off my mind.
I agree that Aldous Huxley's Brave New World is interesting-- especially its unique class system. From what I've read so far, a person's class is based on how they are conditioned as children. Beta children on chapter two, for example, are conditioned through their sleep by using a technique called hypnopedia. The whole chapter shows how children are conditioned to their future environment.
ReplyDeleteThe reason they chose to use this class system is never stated, but it's easy to see that the system they use is similar to hierarchies in the past, which prove to be stable: a few elite, some middle class, and the rest workers.
I hope I helped you understand the book better, it has a really interesting take on a utopian society, and I'm loving it so far.
While interesting, Huxley's Brave New World leaves me with some questions left unanswered. I have yet to finish the book, only having reached chapter 16 or so, but as of yet, this one particular thing is bothering me. Why do certain children get chosen as one class and not another? I was curious on how they chose who belongs where and what these decisions are based on. Another thing, who exactly makes the decisions in the first place? While it may have just gone over my head at some point, I'd love to hear some other's thoughts on the matter for some clarification.
