Being Civilized?

The definition of what makes a society civilized varies depending on who you ask. Who is to say that one society is better than another or has the right to be deemed civilized? The society in Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is one that focuses on social stability and being a place where everyone can be happy. There is a separate reservation of land for those that they deem to be uncivilized and savage that live in a way similar to our own. The question is, which one is truly the civilized society? In Brave New World, the society deemed to be civilized is the one most focused on the mass production of human beings and the use of drugs to keep the citizens happy. This to us seems uncivilized, and we can relate more to that of the savages. So what does it really mean to be civilized?

  1. I also have questioned what is defined as being civilized and why it is considered to be so. What defines things is left to that of the masses. If a general conclusion can be made, then the people will believe what they are told. Being civilized to me means that the people apart of the society act in a mannerly way and respect one another as human beings. If not, then we are no better than animals.

  2. I agree with Itzel Gonzalez. Being civilized means respecting others. We treat others how we want to be treated. We respect others and be polite. We act well mannered. If we fail at that then there is no difference between us and animals.
