Through this I made a connection to Brave New World. All dystopian societies have one thing in common, complete control of the people. Through this control, there is order and with order there is happiness. Control and happiness go hand in hand. However, everything comes at a price. In order to achieve happiness, the government takes away things like books and independence to keep it's people happy. Through this people loose their freedom and ability to think for themselves. This is especially shown in Brave New World with soma, death conditioning, and the caste system. Babies are brought up by the government, designed to play a specific role in society. By conditioning them to like certain things they grow up happy with the job they have. Death conditioning also prevents people from feeling sadness from loss. Soma is also made to eliminate negative emotions that prevent happiness. Consequently, people in the Brave New World society lose their individuality and freedom. Now I wonder, is it better to be completely happy without any threat of sadness, or is it better to become free and independent?

Control and Happiness Go Hand In Hand?
Throughout the whole year I have been either reading books and watching movies or shows that take place in dystopian societies. Farenheit 451, The Giver (the movie), Brave New World all take place in dystopian societies. Reccently, I have just watched a television show called Pyscho-pass, which takes place in a dystopian society where everything from criminal intent to your job is decided by the Sybil System, other wise known as pyscho-pass. When the main character discovers the horrible secret behind the Sybil System, she decides to keep the government's secret from the public eventhough she has to power to completely unravel society. She kept it because she knew that eventhough the system is flawed, it was needed in order to achieve however, she mentioned that human beings as a whole will continue to strive for a "better" or even perfect society best fit for them.

I believe that it is best to live in a world with faults, one that allows its people to be their own individual and act upon their feelings instead of living in one as a slave to a system that controls over every aspect of their society.

ReplyDeleteI would prefer freedom and independence over a corrupt world. Even if that world revolved around a system that allowed it to function, a false life is not something I want. A better way of life could be found than a controlling one.
