A Destined Huxleyan Society

After finishing Amusing Ourselves to Death, about a week ago, I’ve noticed how our society has been changed due to the entrance of a television-based culture. A product of this culture is that many people think visually, that is with imagery, instead of using the printed word. I looked favorably upon the fact that Postman drew upon many examples beginning with the Age of Reason, colloquially referred to as The Enlightenment. My favorite part of the book was when Postman uncovered the effects on society that both the telegraph and photograph created.

Postman did a remarkable job on demonstrating the function and effects of the television in today’s modern society. The television has been selfish in controlling most of today’s discourse. We are moving in the path of a Huxleyan society. We cannot backtrack in time to undo the intellectually tragedy that the television has created. It is thus imperative that we ask ourselves the following: How and can we alleviate the effects of a Huxleyan Society on our road towards progression.
