Power of Technology

While I was reading Here Comes Everybody, Shirky mentions that because of camera phones, news of certain disasters and such spread quickly raising awareness. This shows how powerful technology has become as people were able to document and capture what was going on at the moment in time. Although this wasn't Shirky's main point, I found it rather interesting as we have that power in our hands currently. If used the right way, technology is very useful and benefits us quite well. The world was quickly informed of the danger on the other side of the world in a matter of hours thanks to technology. The tools used organized us to act as one, as a community to help one another out without the need of an oversight or boss. Even now as I typed this blog we are here expressing opinions and news to each other using the same tools in a similar fashion. These are amazing gifts and it's in the hands of high schoolers and even elementary schoolers.

  1. Compared to Postman's view on technology, I find it ironic that Shirky's point of view is more positive. I agree that technology is beneficial when used in the correct manner. It allows us to gather together and spread information and ideas. However, it can also distract us from society when used for our entertainment. Entertainment isn't always bad, I love TV shows and movies. When we entertain ourselves too much, we can ignore what goes on in the world. Still, technology overall is a blessing. Being able to easily communicate with others across the world is incredible.

  2. Emmanuel I agree with your point about how we have the power to interact the way we do with the new social tools we have today. It's very common to see everyone with a mobile device and thus everyone has access to connect with one another. To add on to your point, because everyone has such easy access to these tools, I remember Shirky mentioning how amateurizarion starts to overshadow professionalism if not has completely dominated. To make my point clear I'll use a photographer. Many can capture high quality HD photos with their phone cameras (Apple and Samsung) and can easily publish it on the Internet. However, such photos are high quality one can not tell an amateur photo over a professional at some times. This demonstrates how technology allows for more people to express and share their talents at the cost of overshadowing the professionals.
