I don't mean to defend him specifically but the Vietnam War was very harsh and controversial both politically and morally. (I'm focusing on morally because I'm sure we all learned how politically controversial it was during tenth grade history). If you were to be drafted some would consider it an honor to be serving your country but on the other hand it wasn't exactly right of us to go in to Vietnam either so it could be seen as a wrong choice. Many other men didn't want to be drafted either out of fear or pacifism or some other reason so it isn't exactly fair to call out Trump albeit his reason not to go was purposely sought out. Yet even then, Trump had a legal reason at the time as did other men like college students or veterans who weren't forced to re-enter. Some men even avoided the draft illegally by fleeing to Canada. Also, some men couldn't be drafted as they had jobs known as reserved occupations which the government classified as jobs that needed to be filled by experts and couldn't be abandoned. Unfortunately I couldn't find if politicians were exempt from the draft but I would think so since they are the diplomats for the city, state or nation.
Ultimately, I think that it doesn't matter if our politicians skip the draft as long as they are in position during the draft. If they're not in any political position while the draft is happening they should go and serve. What do you guys think? Should politicians skip the draft or serve our country?
