R.I.P. John the Savage
I just finished reading Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and I enjoyed it. Although the ending was over dramatic. John the Savage ends up hanging himself at the top of the staircase in the lighthouse. I overall enjoyed the story of the book. It's crazy how in their society they don't have mothers or fathers and everyone is cloned which is the most absurd thing about the book. They make dozens of twins that look just like each other and that is crazy. John and Bernard where the only characters who were 'normal'. They were not obsessed with soma and feelies. John was still a little on the crazy side with all the 'cleansing' he did. There was a big change in Bernard Marx towards the end I thought if anybody was gonna go against their society it would be him but he eventually gave in too. In the end I figured out he was just trying to become big socially and was not trying to gain his individuality when he tried using John as his ticket to fame. That all came to an end quickly and Bernard was back to being a brainwashed and 'conditioned' person just like every other clone in the book. I did not like the ending of the book because John's death caught me off guard I was not expecting him to commit suicide. I thought John was gonna be like some hero and put a end to their cloning and conditioning but you can't do that if your dead. John was my favorite character and Huxley had to go have John hang himself. R.I.P. John.

John's death didn't really surprise me. He was alone and didn't feel that anyone really wanted him around. He grew up with savages. Where one has two loving parents and everything is as it was "in the old days". However this was not his life. His mother thought of him as a burden in her life. As soon as she came back to civilization she went straight to soma. Rather than spending that time with her son. His father on the other hand, was too embarrassed and ashamed to own his title. John did not have parents and as you said before Bernard used him for his selfish needs. John just wanted to end all of the pain.
ReplyDeleteP.S: SPOILER ALERT! I just started to read Brave New World and I am now on chapter 12.
