Thoughts on Brave New World (Brave New World Spoiler)

In Amusing Ourselves to Death, Neil Postman states that technology and books cannot coexist with each other. Similar to the idea that technology and emotions and morality cannot exist together in the novel Brave New World. Postman demonstrates that as society becomes more advanced with their technology their focus decreases and the use of books. In Brave New World John the savage opposes the civilized society that he is brought into. He believes that people should have emotions other than happiness. His death symbolizes how emotions and morality cannot exist with technology. John represents emotions and morals which does not fit into a society that spends most of their time under drugs that enhance what they feel. The author uses John’s death to demonstrate that technology and emotions cannot coexist with each other. These books also share the idea that technology has become such a huge part in a persons life.

  1. I agree that technology has become a huge part in our lives, but I don't agree that technology and emotions can not coexist. Technology allows us to do things that we couldn't do before like talk to someone that lives far away which brings people joy. The television also brings many different emotions depending on what is being shown from sadness to confusion.
