Happiness or Freedom?

I was reading a Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and he came across the topic happiness and freedom. In the book everyone would rather be happy than free. Which is where the whole soma ordeal comes to play. Everyone takes soma whenever they start to feel any emotion other than happiness or sexual stimulation. A person could argue why would anyone want to feel sadness, anger, or even experience losing a love one. A few characters in the book would rather feel freedom rather than happiness, which is not excepted in the story.

I personally would rather feel free than happiness, because you can abstain happiness from freedom but I don't think you can abstain freedom from happiness. I would not want to mask my feelings. Feelings are apart of life and although you experience bad feelings you also experience good ones. I personally would not trade my freedom. What do you think about thus topic.

  1. I too would rather, be free than happy because people living in that society aren't even truly happy. What they are feeling is artificial happiness. So being free from having to suffer artificial happiness is what I'd prefer.
