While I was on Room for Debate I came across an article called "Is It Fair to Rate Professors Online?" and in this article it is discussed how college students look on Rate My Professors before signing up for a teacher. Rate My Professors, gives students a chance to evaluate their professors and give new students a heads up about each teacher. Unlike high school, college students are allowed to choose who they want as their professor so Rate My Professors is an essential tool to them.
Many college students throughout the world have to pay a high amount for tuition, so it is only fair that they get to choose the best professor. Although you can't always depend on what others have to say, it is still convenient to see other's opinions. In high school we aren't allowed to choose who we want as teachers but I feel like it would be good to have something like Rate My Professors. If we are able to see what past students have to say about each teacher we would know what to expect from them. If we had something like Rate My Professors would you guys take the time to rate past teachers that you have had? Would you take the time to read what other students have written or do you think it wouldn't help you at all?
This is a good idea to a certain extent, opinions on a teacher's teaching skills is often clouded by judgements of what the students feels about them. Some students can say that the teacher is terrible because they do not like their personality or the way they look. A teacher can have excellent teaching skills but be disliked by many students which can affect the way incoming students will feel about the teacher because of biased opinions.
ReplyDeleteIf I were going to college, I would definitely read what others have written about a certain teacher. It would help me see if their teaching style is something I enjoy or can understand. I also agree with what Tania said that people could just rate a teacher's skill based on their feeling for them, but I would try to keep my choice of taking a class based on the facts that other students give me on the website and not only their opinions.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with you, Lani. My aunt uses Rate My Professors for her college class so she can get the best teacher for the course. Not only would it be helpful for new students to get a feel for the class they are planning to take, but it would be helpful to teachers too! They can improve upon their teaching skills according to their students' opinions. If we had a Rate My Professors at Mayfair, I would definitely submit my input on different teachers I've had.
DeleteI agree, if I was interested in a course and I wanted to know more about the professor I would want to have read what others would have to say. It would be helpful to know how the teacher acts or their teaching style before hand to know whether they would be a good fit for me or not. Although some students may not rate the teacher honestly, it would still be good to know what others would have to say.
ReplyDeleteI think being able to rate your teacher would be really cool because at least you would know what you are getting yourself into with certain classes. Although i personally think it is a great idea i truly don't believe all high school students could have such a responsibility to have the jurisdiction tell an appropriate and unbiased opinion of a teacher. I feel an alternative could be that you allow AP student to rate AP teachers so a student could really see if they desire to be in that class.
