Impulses

The desire to be with another person is an impulse that humans are born with and act upon as they grow up. These strong feelings, however, can be dangerous and lead to instability within a society. In Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley the people of the World State are free to act upon these desires and are encouraged to do so as a way to minimize their natural impulses. And so, by ridding of these impulses, the stability of the society has a lesser chance of being unraveled, but at a cost. Due to the freedom that allows one to be with whoever they desire, those affected lose a part of what makes them human. When one tries to take control of their impulses, they make those around them feel uneasy and unnerved. For this reason, people are encouraged to have several relationships with different people at them same time to fulfill their impulses. This aspect of the society is one that is very different from that of our own. Is giving into human impulses the correct way of going about it or would it be better for one to control themselves?

  1. I think it would be better for us to control our impulses. Being with several people at once doesn't give a person enough time to learn everything about another and finding out what is really amazing about one single person. I think it is good to build a relationship with one person and spend time getting to know them.

    1. Yeah I agree, being with more than one person or always switching lacks depth. Understanding each other is vital in having a long-lasting relationship

  2. A balance of control and acting is key. Perhaps from a girl's perspective this could be different, but since guys *usually* has to be the one to initiate a relationship or any kind of "thing", the timing in doing so is often on impulse. Controlling impulse and thinking and planning for the "perfect" instance can lead to expectations that will never be met.
