First off, I am not someone who has that many views or any affiliation with drugs and hardly ever talks about them, but as I was doing the room for debate assignment and looking through the New York Times website I came across an article regarding marijuana. The article and the video linked to it was very interesting and told about the presidential nominee for the Green Party, Jill Stein, supporting the legalization of marijuana.
Stein claims that marijuana is actually a weak drug, compared to the dangers that lie in already legal drugs like alcohol and cigarettes. She has learned the science behind the drug and its effects from her previous experience as a medical doctor for over 25 years. She claims it is dangerous because it is illegal, it is not illegal on the account of being dangerous. She states that the true danger behind marijuana is the “underground economy and the violence” that goes along with illegal drug trade. The war on marijuana that has caused large amounts of death and incarceration, is what needs to stop. It has made the US #1 in the world in incarceration. I side with many of her view and the suggestions that once the drug is legal it should be regulated, and regulated in such a way that does not create a corporate monopoly like the one on tobacco, but instead in a way that actually helps the economy. What do you think about the legalization of marijuana? Will it ultimately benefit the US?
To me if marijuana becomes legal it will benefit America in a positive way.Since right now jails are becoming over populated due to people getting minor misdemeanors for carrying marijuana. If misdemeanors like these do not exist, than jails will no longer be over populated.Allowing the real criminals to serve time, because no one should be put in jail for doing something they enjoy, since this is suppose to be "the land of the free."
ReplyDeleteI agree, if marijuana became legal in America it would bring many benefits to the economy and health. Granted, if marijuana became legal there should be restrictions and regulations that come with it. Legalizing marijuana would reduce the amount of people incarcerated, thus reducing the prison population. Over crowded prisons have become a major problem in the United States, and legalizing marijuana would help solve this problem. Also, the revenue that marijuana would bring to the economy of the US would bring a big boost to the amount of money circulating in the US.
ReplyDeleteI agree that legalizing marijuana will absolutely be beneficial for the economy of America. Colorado is one of the fastest growing economies in the U.S and collected 53 million dollars in taxes from the first year of legalizing marijuana. A lot of people argue that legalizing marijuana would cause the majority of the citizens to just be high all the time, but Colorado proved that wrong. Having it illegal still causes so much unnecessary trouble for law enforcement to deal with. Some strains of marijuana that are high in CBD's are given to patients with illnesses such as arthritis and epilepsy to help treat those illnesses. I believe marijuana should just be legalized already, for it will be a lot more beneficial to not only some people, but to the economy as well.
