Should Los Angeles New Yorkify?

On Room for Debate, I found an article discussing if Los Angeles should or should not become as urbanized as New York. Some of the debaters feel that Los Angeles was already becoming a city that would soon be as urbanized as New York. They also mention that New York is has a big difference from Los Angeles because many people do not use car transportation and New York is more tourist-based filled with a lot of pedestrians. As for Los Angeles, people crowd in one or two areas such as L.A Live or the Alley where street vendors sell their goods. Hollywood is also another place that has movie theaters and fancy restaurants for plenty of tourists. The New York environment is totally different due to a lot of different personalities and busy workers. Other debaters felt that Los Angeles will never been as urbanized as New York. They think Los Angeles is fine just the way it is. Instead, they feel Los Angeles should become a better city without the influence of being similar to another major city.

In my opinion, Los Angeles should become more urbanized to a certain extent. We should not become like New York where there are crowded streets where it seems everyone is in a rush. I have had an interesting experience while I was in New York. People seemed not to give a care in the world. They would bump into you and they would give you the impression that they many people in the city are kind of rude. I felt like I was in a rush every single time I walked the streets of New York. There was even times when I almost got separated from my mom and my brother while we were trying to get on the subway. I feel Los Angeles is not perfect but it gives me piece of mind when I get the chance to relax instead of feeling rushed. The difference is that New York has tourist attractions very close together and Los Angeles' tourist attractions are more spread apart. In Los Angeles, tourist can visit Broadway Street in Hollywood or enjoy a visit to Griffith Park filled with a lot of a fun activities. Do I seem biased because I have lived in Los Angeles my whole life? Maybe New York was a city I am just not used to? What do you guys think about Los Angeles becoming New Yorkified?

  1. Personally, I think Los Angeles should not become New Yorkified because every city has it's own characteristics that make them unique of the rest of the major metropoles. Los Angeles has beaches and mountains, whereas New York has shopping centers. New York has historical buildings, whereas Los Angeles has modern museums. I have also been to New York City and I think NYC is way different from LA. Everything from the pace of life to the buildings' size is anything but the same. I would characterize New York as a great city to follow; however, we should not copy the urban planning of another city for our benefit. New York has also been around longer, thus it's size and urban sprawl.
