The Gap Between "The Smart" and "The Dumb"
Postman tells us of how the maddeningly fast advancement of technology is making the people less intelligent. However, in the age of the internet that we live in today, I believe Postman is partially wrong. People now have access to information previously unavailable at insane speeds. This, in turn, allows people to absorb information much faster than before, where discoveries were put on physical copies or distributed orally, making it much more difficult to share. It could be argued that the excess amounts of information gained through the internet is what's causing the degradation of knowledge within the people, or perhaps it's the opposite? In the debate, "Is Facebook Ruining Journalism?" it is argued that people are being fed streamlined information from only a single source, causing them to be narrow-minded. In my opinion, Postman's argument is not completely wrong. People who desire to be smarter now have a higher capacity to gain knowledge, whereas people who don't become more ignorant. Essentially, I think that the gap between the "smart" and the "dumb" is increasing as information becomes easier to access. Can I have your guys' opinion on this?
