Can What you Wear Affect your Job?
I recently read an article on Room for Debate called "When it Comes to Office Attire, Most Anything Goes." What was interesting about this article is that it showed how time has changed from guys wearing suits to wearing gym clothes at work. I realize that now everyone wants to be comfortable, but is it always the right choice? For example my mom's job is not allowed to wear jeans to work, because it's not considered "presentable". Personally, I love jeans, but I would have to agree with my mom's job. People go to her job for help and if they see her in shorts or a t-shirt what will they think. I know everyone says never judge a book by it's cover, but in all honesty I do without even realizing it. If you see someone in business attire you may automatically think hey they seem very professional. However if you see someone in basketball shorts and a shirt your not to sure. However, the way you dress doesn't affect the technical part of your job, but it may affect the clients emotionally about what they think about you. what do you think does it really matter what you wear to work? Have you ever judged someone based on the attire their wearing?

In a job interview, first impressions are everything. What do you think the interviewers will think when they see someone in gym clothes? They want to hire someone who would go out of their way to look nice because it also shows what kind of employee they will be. So I do think that dressing nice for an interview is one of the most important first impressions.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is very important to dress appropriately at work even if it is uncomfortable because it makes people look more professional. I personally have judged people by what they are wearing because it is important to dress appropriately every where you go.

ReplyDeleteI feel that judging people by what they wear is just our human nature. People like to categorize things such as rich, poor, mean, nice, conservative, or radical. What a person wears says something about them and that is why we need regulations at work. I know some people hate being judged on what they wear, but looking presentable is very important. In my opinion, if someone was a CEO of a company like Google, and they entered their office with a ripped t-shirt and baggy pants, I would not have much respect or trust when it comes to making deals with their company. If people are so worried about dressing to be comfortable, then maybe the job they have is not for them. They can probably find comfortable clothes that are job appropriate and also fit their needs of being comfortable.
ReplyDeleteI definitely feel what you wear at your workplace will affect how others view you. Even though I work as a lifeguard where our uniform does not provide the most coverage, we are required to limit the amount of skin being shown by wearing one-piece swim suits and rash guards. I think the way you dress should ultimately fit where you are going. Wearing a swim suit to a pool is slightly different than wearing gym clothes to an office. I am not saying you must wear a suit to work every day or that the clothes you wear define your work ethic, but people are quick to judge on appearances which means dressing nicer will not hurt business in any way.
ReplyDeleteI agree, first impressions are everything, and ultimately how you are judged. Your attire should reflect how serious you are about your workplace. Although dressing comfortable is ideal, it shouldn't be done at the workplace, much less if your work involves serious matters.
