I read an article on Room for Debate that discussed the matter of beauty pageants being bad for women. Some debaters claimed that the pageants give women all around the world an example of what stereotypical beauty is. In history, winners of the Miss America beauty pageant are not picked as a winner because of their ideas or personality. Beauty pageants have a history of choosing their winners over the way they look more than their personality. In the past, people felt women of color never really had a chance to win even if they were allowed to compete. The debaters came to the conclusion that pageants were racist and sexist. Meanwhile, other debaters claim that the winners of beauty pageant were true feminist, especially in today's modern world.
In my opinion, beauty pageants are becoming more acceptable as rules and certain categories are in the process of being removed from the contest. For example, the swimsuit competition was just removed from certain pageants in the world. This competition has been known to start a controversy between people who support pageants and people who feel pageants are degrading to women. In the past, I know pageants were very biased and focused of the way women looked other than personality. Things are different today than they were in the past. Many people are strong believers in feminism and people in America have came together and developed some sort of respect for one another as well. Do you think pageants have improved for the sake of women?
I strongly disagree with the idea of Beauty pageants. Beauty pageants degrade women especially ones of color. For years, most of the winners have been non-black ethnicities. In my opinion, I don't believe that a woman should need the entire world to tell her she's beautiful, which can be a result from
ReplyDeleteInsecurities. The confidence within you should always be greater than what anyone has to say. I am a strong, proud, intelligent black woman and I will never need someone to tell me I'm beautiful.
