Students Run This Now?
Remember in elementary school when they had parent-teacher conference week, where you literally had to schedule a date and time within that week. Remember being a bit nervous because your teacher might say something about your behavior, even though you knew you were a little angel compared to the other kids? Oh, and your parents give you that look like you'll be in so much trouble once you get home. Imagine what it'd be like if during those conferences, the child is the one that is talking and the parents and teacher are listening. I recently came across a Room for Debate article about students leading the parent-teacher conferences. I'm not completely sure how I feel about this yet, being that I'm in high school and there is no particular week cut out for the conferences. The article first explains the purpose of the teacher leading the conference, saying that the point is to acknowledge how the teacher works and thinks of the student's day-to-day behavior, attitude, and effort. They also build a relationship between the parents and the teacher. The idea of a student-led conference may be trending. The teacher would prepare the student for the conference to present their previous work to their parents to show their effort and quality of what they've been completing in the classroom. Basically, the child would be taking responsibility for their learning. Having parent-teacher conferences while the child is at home is defeating the purpose supposedly. Students may just run things now.

My sister goes to the Las Flores Homeshool Academy where she is homeschooled in the science and history subjects, but goes to school three days a week for a teacher to school her in English and math. The parent-teacher conferences at Las Flores happen at the end of every month. The purpose of these meetings is for the student to show the teacher what homeschooling has been accomplished. From what I have seen, the student leads these meetings and it speaks volumes on what the child has actually learned. I think student led conferences are a good idea.
ReplyDeleteStudents running parent-teacher conferences may be a considerable idea. I believe that students should have a voice as well rather than being bashed with comments. If us students were allowed to run conferences everything would be seen from a totally different perspective. Instead of teachers stating what's best or us, we can tell them ourselves what is best for us. I
ReplyDeleteThink This should be a topic for a proposal in the future of schooling. Let us students have a voice.
