Pokemon Go!?

Recently, the virtual game, Pokemon Go, has become a big hit and very popular. As a result, I was attracted to and read the articles for "Pokemon Go? Get Outta Here!" in Room for Debate. Although I agree with the authors, Richard Louv and Sarah Jeong, I still believe the app is a waste of time. Instead of spending quality time with family outside or enjoying the scenery, people are looking down at their phones. Yes, the app increases social interaction by making the gamer take trips outside to collect pokemon or communicate with others who play the game, but the app has also caused accidents to happen. Some children and teens have been kidnapped, and some have been hit by cars. This proves that people who play the game are not fully aware of their surroundings. With this in mind, I decided not to follow the crowd and download the app. I'm too afraid that the game will distract me when I need to get homework done or perform other important tasks. What do you think about the app, Pokemon Go? Do you play the game too?

  1. Personally, I have only had good things come from having the game. I got it because people were talking about it and in the beginning I did make an effort to go outside and walk to look for Pokémon. I don't really do that anymore, but I'll open the game sometimes if I hear that something good is close by. The game is really big in my church community and we've had an event centered around the game. It has been mentioned in numerous services and not just in the teen services. Last Sunday, our head pastor mentioned the game and at the end of service, the church band played the Pokémon theme song. This Sunday the church is having a Pokémon GO Luau that I'm planning to attend. I understand that some people have been hurt because of the game but I think it's important to remember that at the end of the day, it's just a game. I think if that is remembered more positive will come from the game than negative.

  2. I think the game is very interesting and have been playing for a while now. I've heard of these accidents, but I wouldn't blame the game. Just because a game is interesting doesn't mean people should lose focus of what is going on around them. I think the game is good if people know their limits and don't go around running red lights to catch a Pokemon.

  3. I agree with Iani Choi. The game is very interesting. It allows you to go outside and explore and meet new people. Yes, some accidents have happened but it's not due to the game. While playing you should still be aware of your surroundings.

  4. I can concur with all of four of you ladies and can say that Pokémon Go is a really fun game that I have enjoyed playing personally. I can definitely agree with Alyssa since we both attend the same church and have both attended and plan to attend our many Pokémon themed events in our youth group. Even though there has been some negativity heard on it and the accidents that have occurred, I wouldn't blame the game but the fact that people are not more careful and aware of their surroundings. I too believe that the came could be very enjoyable when safety is taken into consideration because that is the main priority. Safety=fun. I can also say that I to will be attending the Luau at my church on Sunday and I am looking forward to it. I am happy to say that I have not been playing the game lately and actually getting on top of things so it will be interesting playing it again after such a long time.

    1. In case any of you Pokémon trainers out there want to come, Noa and I go to Bellflower Calvary and the event is free to attend, but if you want food, I believe it is $5. I'm not exactly sure on what time it is, ask Noa if interested.

  5. I believe that Pokemon Go is an easy way to get out of the house, but I think that it's not a good way to converse with new people. It is just a good way to stay active.
