While looking for my five
choices for "Room for Debate” I came across an article called
"Getting the Mentally Ill out of jail and Off the Streets?". This
article really spoke to me. Living in Compton, California, I always saw a
lot of homeless people just wondering around, asking for money, or doing
peculiar things. Most homeless people have a mental illness. Some
homeless people are military veterans. Aside from that currently, 17% of local
jail inmates have metal illness. Our taxpayers pay about $31,000 per
inmate. That’s only in local jails. 1 in 4 mentally ill inmates actually get
care for their illness. Many would agree that taxpayers should contribute
something to the mentally ill. There should be more shelters or recovery
centers for them to have good care and work on their issues.
Do you agree or
disagree that prison tax dollars be budgeted for jail and metal health centers?
