Evidence

Writing is an important tool in our society. As such, Postman made a point in his book that the written word is used more often to prove a point or win in an argument. People do not really like to listen to someone if they don't have written evidence. For example in essays, it is always recommend to provide evidence for what you have to write. In this case you would look in a novel and get quotes from it to back up your points. My point is that written word provides more evidence then the spoken one. I agree with postman in this sense since he also states a similar opinion on this. School always seems to push the idea of proving evidence for everything we do even now I have to provide evidence for this blog on I am doing. Do you believe the spoken word is better then the written word?

  1. Personally, I do agree that written word is of better evidence than spoken because it is there. However, I believe a person expressed themselves better through spoken word, well atleast for myself. You state that you must provide evidence on every statement you make in an essay. That is something I do as well however before I write it in print I say it first because I explain myself better through spoken word. With that said, I agree with Postman about written word being the best evidence to prove a point in an argument though I preferably like to use spoken word to express my ideas.

  2. I believe that the spoken word is stronger than when it is written. The speaker is able to express themselves in their speech and show more emotion. As far as evidence, the written word is easier and more accessible for use. Even if what is said and written use the same words, it is more efficient to use the written word since not everyone is able to write down or remember exactly what is said. I do not think emotions can be captured the same way in writing if they were meant to be spoken. In writing there is more need for interpretation and tone unless it is directly established. Whether the speaker's emotion is important in the use of evidence depends on what is being proven or discussed.

  4. I personally feel that the spoken word has a certain "ummf" to it. Like Sofia said the spoken word projects more emotion. Don't get me wrong, an author that has a really great way of expressing the written word will always capture me, but just imagine if they spoke it aloud. Sort of like storytelling. Also, I believe when things are said orally the listener has to be more mindful in paying attention to the speaker as opposed to reading the written word. With the written word you can read it over multiple times, but with the spoken you have to challenge your recollection of the said information. However, the written word can be really helpful when it comes to studying; I tend to remember things better when I write them, but I'll always have a love for the spoken word, it tends to capture me in that moment.

  5. Written word is more open to interpretation than spoken word. Of course the written word can help prove your point by providing factual information, but when using the spoken word you're much more able to get your point across.

  6. The spoken word definitely outdoes the written word. The spoken word can really capture a persons mind. The written word just leaves everything to the imagination. When spoken certain voice inflections and different tones can give things a different meaning or different feel. It has more power to it than the written word that is also why there are so many public speakers in the world today, because you can orally impact people. It also harder to input emotion into the written word unlike when it is spoken you can hear someones conviction and truth.

  7. I believe that written word is better than the spoken word. In written word you have evidence and quotes to back people up on their statement. However, the spoken word can use emotion to capture a certain essence that is not capable with written word. I believe that both can be used to different advantages. Personally, if I use written word its more beneficial to me to provide factual evidence.
