There are many alternatives that allow people to use technology that isn't so "hands on" and is a safer method to using technology while behind the wheel. Many vehicles today are installed with systems that are compatible with smartphones and androids that help prevent handheld smartphone use. In the end, any use of technology or communication while driving is very dangerous and carries its risk because it distracts the drive from their main task, which is to focus on the road and drive. What do you think. Should stricter laws be created to prohibit the use of technology behind the wheel? Are states being to lenient with the punishment of people who are caught driving while texting?

Texting While Driving
While on the site Room for Debate I came across an article called, " How to Stop People From Texting While Driving". Many times drivers often get distracted while driving because they're to busy checking their phones or sending a text message. Most states have tried to deter people from doing this by instilling laws that prohibit the use of technology all together while driving, but this doesn't seem to be working. In New York, legislators introduced a bill that would allow police officers arriving at the scene of a crash to test drivers' phones for evidence of recent activity with a device called the "Textalyzer'- the digital equivalent of the Breathalyzer. Although this will help officers determine if the crash was caused by the use of technology while driving, it defeats the purpose if the objective is to deter people from using said technology.

I agree with what you're saying. Technology has become a great distraction, and has caused many accidents and deaths. I do think that stricter laws need to be enforced to prevent accidents. I also think that people need to understand that when you are texting and driving, not only your life is at stake, but the life of the citizens around you are in danger as well. I'm learning how to drive, and I know some of my classmates are already driving. I wouldn't want any of us to be driving on the same road as a reckless driver who is too attached to their phone. It affects multiple citizens, which is why stricter laws should be enforced.
ReplyDeleteI also hope that future cars will have a feature where we could talk and text without needing to have our hands off the wheel, which would help the texting and driving problem and potentially save lives.
I agree in that we need much stricter laws in regards to technology being used while driving. Car crashes due to electronic distractions is the second cause for tragic deaths. I believe they should put some kind of device in every car where the car won't start unless you put it in the device/holder. This would cause a decrease in car accidents with texting and driving.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what all of you had said. We cannot deny the fact that technology has caused many traffic accidents. My aunt and mom use their Apple Watches to read texts and reply (using voice recognition). Although it still slightly distracts them, it's better than taking one hand of the wheel and looking at an iPhone screen (which seems to be getting bigger and bigger each year). If we cannot completely control people and make them stop using their phones, I think it's best to come up with alternatives such as the Apple Watch. Cars today also come with bluetooth that connects to the phone which makes answering and making calls handsfree.
ReplyDeleteI agree also. Technology is and shouldn't be the most important thing to people. People feel that it is so important that they are willing to put their lives and the lives of others in danger. Instead of giving tickets as a consequence I feel that they should have to do time in jai or even the chance of their license being taken away. I get what Jasmine is saying about being able to still text while your hands stay on the wheel but I feel that is still poyentiually dangerous. You are still not focusing on the road. If someone feels that a text or call is just that important than they should just pull over.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the idea to create more laws to prevent the use of cell phones and other devices while driving. Though I do not text and drive, I often use my phone as a GPS and understand the struggle of trying to ignore phone calls or texts you notice while stopped at a red light for a minute or so. Texting and driving has recently caused more accidents than drinking and driving does. A simple text is not worth your life and people should stress this idea, taking more precautions such as pulling over, or waiting until they arrive at their destination to send a simple text. Even if someone would be mad that you did not reply right away, imagine how much worse things would be if a simple reply cost your own life.
ReplyDeleteTexting and driving is definitely a problem and causes many car accidents and unfortunate deaths. However, there can be no stricter laws made to prevent people from texting and driving than there already is. Making texting and driving illegal is the best way to discourage people from texting and driving. If all cars were made so that they wouldn't start without a phone in a device/holder, then people without phones, who lost their phones, or broke their phones would not be able to drive. The punishments for texting and driving are already bad enough. Someone texting or driving could end up in a car accident ending their lives which is consequence enough. Increasing the punishment would probably not stop people from texting and driving.
ReplyDeleteI think that this is a topic that a lot of high schoolers should read. I myself read about this topic in Room for Debate also, and i think that the consequences should be expressed more. So people with take in and realize if they text and drive not only are they raising the possibility of taking there own life but they are also raising the possibility of taking someone else life.
