Are We Really Learning?

While reading Amusing Ourselves to Death today, I was intrigued when Postman predicted students would have learned that “anything worth learning can take the form of entertainment”(154) the more they watched television. I was intrigued because what he claimed has become partially true and can be applied to almost anyone in the way that anything someone sees on television these days can be considered a form of learning, when in reality some are only watching for their own amusement. For example, a commonly known show like The Simpsons at times can teach valuable lessons that people could learn a lot from to apply to their own life situations, but the majority of the audience in reality is simply watching to laugh at what the characters are doing and most likely would not be able to give an accurate moral from the episode if asked. More realistically, shows like Criminal Minds or CSI could teach anyone what they can do when a crime is taking place, how to provide useful evidence for the police, or how to investigate a crime scene if they are a witness or victim, but most are more than likely paying attention to the dramatic scenes taking place within the episode and how the characters are dealing with the situations instead of what they are doing to make progress. On the other hand, there are programs such as Animal Planet or Nova, and even entire channels like National Geographic that provide useful documentaries about various topics that people could learn a lot from. Sometimes those same documentaries even include experts to provide important details and are used in schools today for the purpose of educating students on a certain topic. Overall, what do you guys think? Are all TV shows meant to be their for our entertainment or are some useful to learn from? Possibly, can any show teach something valuable if examined carefully enough? Please share your ideas.

  1. I believe there are shows that are created solely for entertainment, or shows solely created for educational purposes. But, it is the viewers opinion on what they find as entertaining or not. As an example I enjoyed the show Frozen Planet very much, but whenever I would try and get others in my family to watch it, they would tell me to turn on something else that contained a little more drama rather than male polar bears leaving their families.

I have never believed that The Simpsons could teach me any life lessons, but now that you have brought that to my attention I guess that any show, or movie can have some educational value if you look for it.

  2. I do feel that it is sometimes possible to learn lessons from television, however, I also believe that there are two main risks to television as a method of teaching.
The first problem with television as a medium for education is that it raises one's expectations for the entertainment value of learning. In other words, it makes it so people only want to learn lessons when entertainment is involved, meaning that they can not learn it in any other way without losing interest.
The other issue I have with television as a way of learning is that people rarely take shows seriously and only watch them for their own entertainment. If a person does not take it seriously, how would they learn anything?
Again, I do not think it is impossible to learn from television, I just think that it is not the best method because it risk hindering the viewer's learning abilities and taking the meaning out of the lessons it tries to teach.

  3. I feel that many shows give people the opportunity to learn real life lessons. However, they put the information out there and people choose to either entertain themselves or learn for themselves. For example, I enjoy watching criminal minds because it helps me understand what a criminal experienced that led them to committing a crime. I feel that the show reveals a lot of cases that no one would expect to happen to them such as criminals who are attracted to murdering a specific group such as blondes, blue eyes, brow skin, children, women, and elders. It is nice to learn these things criminals can be attracted to but watch the show led me to feel kind of paranoid and aware of my surroundings. I agree with you saying the message can be lost; however, sometimes people like me take messages very differently.
