Sex Ed in an App

"Sex Ed in an App" was a topic on "Room for Debate" that caught my attention. There was a debate on whether sex ed should stay in the classroom or if that information should be available in an app. One of the debaters was worried that the app could corrupt the systematic approach that reaches students the most. On the other hand another debater thought that the app was a great idea because teens spend most of their time on their phones; therefore, why not make it available where they spend most of their time.

I personally believe that the app isn't a bad idea, yet sex ed is something students should learn in a classroom. The app is a great idea, but it is only helpful to those who want to learn about it. On the other hand if it is taught in school most people will have more knowledge of the topic. What are your thoughts on this topic?

  1. I feel like It's not a bad idea that they have an app for sex ed. I believe that it is a good idea, because some teens are afraid to go talk to their parents/teachers. It can sometimes be a very awkward subject to ask people about. However, with the app you can use the safety of your phone to see the answers of some questions you might have. I feel it’s better using the app then being afraid to ask a teacher and experimenting by yourself. However, it can be bad, because some stuff parents don't want the kids knowing about, and with the teacher you know that whatever they teach it will be appropriate towards their age group. That is just my opinion on the topic.

  2. I think sex ed in an app can be useful for someone that can't access learning it in a classroom environment. I feel like learning it in a classroom would get information around quicker because it is something you have to learn and not everyone would download the app. Me personally, I would much rather prefer learning it in a classroom because I wouldn't want the app to take up my storage and because I know I'm not going to actually use it. Although many people do spend a lot of time on their phones, I don't think people will free willingly learn about sex ed on their own time.
