Summer Homework Q&A

Do you have any questions on the summer homework? I'd be willing to help.

Since Ms. Fletcher is on vacation, and she will not be checking the blog as often, I can try to help anyone who has questions on the summer homework. Here are some links to a couple of old posts where Fletcher explained a few things about the work:

Just leave a comment and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Also, if any of you "regulars" on the blog see an unanswered question, feel free to answer it before me! I'll be checking my phone every so often throughout the day. (Oh boy. If no one leaves a comment... how embarrassing!)

  1. I have a question: how do you come up with ideas for what to post about? I need one more blog post, and I have been coming up dry for several days of thought. Most of my attention is toward band nowadays, and that isn't really relevant here.

    1. For the most part, my ideas for posts were a bit spontaneous. You can really write about anything, but I understand it is easier said than done. There isn't an exact rhyme or reason when thinking of an idea for the blog. If you have an idea, just try to find a way to put it into words -- even if you aren't sure if that idea is worth a post. For me, I wanted to try to make a unique post from everyone else, and that is what kept me idling for the longest time. I know that making another post about (for example) your thoughts on Brave New World might sound a bit overrated. A lot of people have done that on the blog. However, each one of those posts differ from each other because everyone's opinions are different. Try writing about your thoughts on one of the books. It wouldn't hurt. I understand the struggle of trying to think of an idea to post about. Do you have any ideas that you have been putting aside? Don't overthink them and just write. How has technology changed? How has it helped? How do you think it will change in the years to come? All of our books have talked about these things in one way or another. Now, you just have to find a connection. Try watching the news in the morning. Watch a program on TV just to see how ads function. You know who has witnessed some of the most technological change? Your parents! Is there anything you'd be curious to ask your parents about regarding the books? Don't forget Room for Debate. Was there anything on Room For Debate that you had a strong opinion about? You could try elaborating on your position in a post. I hope this helps at least a little bit, Jacob.

    2. JZ: There are only four posts to write, and you were asked to read so much. I know you can think of something. The books are full of ideas.

  2. My question, can this question count as one of the eight comments we need for the blog? If so, cool! Only three more to go!

    1. I'm not quite sure about that, Peter. I'm pretty sure each response has to include some type of intellectual thought. Nice try, though.

  3. If anyone is struggling with the analytical essays, this is the advice that Ms. Fletcher gave me: "My best advice to you right now, without seeing what you're doing, is to say "lower your standards." Sometimes, we get so caught up in seeking perfection that we freeze up. Look at the question in the prompt, and then ANSWER the question. Simple. Use evidence from the book to help you craft your answer. You know what to do. Just do it, and don't sweat it so much. It's summer homework. You're gonna be OK, I promise you.

When I'm stuck, really good and stuck, you know what I do? I throw a dishtowel over my computer screen so I can't see what I've written, and I just write like a maniac for 30 minutes, trying to answer the question. Then, I get up, find myself a snack or a tall drink of water with lots of ice, then come back to the desk and whip the dishtowel off, and throw away most of what I've written. But usually, there will be a sentence or two in that hot mess that I can use."

I hope her advice can help you all as much as it has helped me. Good luck with your summer homework guys, we're getting closer to the due date. Don't stress, don't worry, just work!
