Too much technology
I recently went to Canada with my family and by spending a whole week with them I realized that my younger cousins use technology a lot. When we were there I hardly used my phone or iPad because there were so many people to talk to in the house and when we weren't at the house we were out visiting lakes, shopping, or doing some sort of fun activity. However, I realized that my younger cousins would not even play or talk to each other when we were at the house, and the reason for that was because they would all be on their iPads or one of their parent's phones. Whenever it was time to get ready so we could go somewhere some of them would even start crying because we took the iPad away. I was completely astonished when that happened because I remember being that age and I never wanted to play on a phone or an iPad, especially when my cousins were there. I wanted to play outside. Those were just some of my thoughts. What do you guys think? Have you experienced anything similar with your families?

I have experienced this too! I always wondered why my cousins had the tendency to linger on their electronic devices rather than hang around with their family members. I always thought it partially had to do with the fact that they were surrounded by these gadgets growing up. Therefore, they view electronics as a necessity rather than a pleasure. However, I noticed that when my cousins don't see each other very often they would rather choose to play with each other than be on their devices. I also remember when I was younger that I always chose to play with my cousins over playing on a phone, iPad or any other type of electronic gadget.
ReplyDeleteYou're not alone. This is one of the main problems of our generation today. We have spent too much time distracting ourselves with technology, we forgot how to communicate and socialize. I admit there are many entertaining things that one can do on a tablet or smart phone, but we must also admit to ourselves that too much of it can lead to too much attachment to the certain gadget. When I was also younger, playing outside was something I enjoyed better than doing things that involved electronics.
ReplyDeleteI see this all the time when my nephews and nieces come to visit me. Its like they're so absorbed into the tiny screen that they become oblivious to everything else. Its a shame that at such a young age they loose their chance to be a kid and play outside, get dirty, and make friends because of technology.
ReplyDeleteI feel like anyone with younger siblings, cousins, nephews, or nieces have personally experienced this as well. We are surrounded by technology almost every where we go and it continually keeps growing. Children these days are so used to having some device in their hand that when they don't have one they don't know what to do. However, I recently came back from a camping trip with my family and some friends. There were a total of 11 kids and none of us had phone signal or internet, so we were forced to talk and hang out with one another. To my surprise the younger kids were able to handle not having a device in their hands and many of them even said they enjoyed playing games without their devices.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I do feel the change from baby's born in the early 2000's compared to those born in more recent times in aspects of the dependence on technology. It is roughly a ten year difference, but as you said, I don't remember having modern kind of technology available to us such ipads or iphones as toddlers. I wanted to spend time with my cousins and explore as any other two to five year old would.
ReplyDeleteI can see the obvious change of toddler dependency of technology in my two little cousins. At two or three years old, they knew how to perform basic controls on apple devices. They were of course fascinated by the devices, so they quickly grew dependent on them. When I was a toddler, the only entertainment of modern times available to me was television. Today's toddlers have access to a wider variety of entertainment than we did growing up. It worries me that the toddlers of today will be even more dependent on technology than the present teenagers are.
