Pro-creator?

I have just started to read Brave New World and I find it very interesting. In this society there is no such thing as a parent, just the thought of it is an epiphany to those who live in it. The Utopian society is made so that parents are not needed. For there is no need for copulation, most of the children are brought up by test tubes but how would a child learn to love or forgive without being raised by another human being. In chapter two, the D.N.C experiments on infants by shocking them so that they would hate flowers," Their little bodies twitched and stiffened; their limbs moved jerkily as if to tug of unseen wires" (pg.21). Why would someone need to do something so cruel to get a child to hate flowers?

In spite of curiosity, I wanted to know how each of you felt about this. The whole not having parents thing. Are parents a significant factor in ones life or do you agree with the ways of the D.H.C (Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning)?

  1. As I read that part in the book I was very shocked to say the least! Starting off the book and reading about how these babies were made in test tubes was very confusing, I had to make sure I was reading and understanding correctly. They explained that there were no mother and fathers and how those terms were considered sexual and not said often. It's weird in our society to think of anything like that because we all have a mother and father, that is how we are created. I do think parents are a signicant role in our lives because they are the ones who raise us and teach us many values that are helpful in life. In Brave New World everyone in the same class are basically taught to believe the same thing and live a certain life.

    1. I mean I guess anything that we're raised with is considered "normal". I just found it very interesting because what would happen if the machines were to one day break down? They'd have to go back to the old ways. Which would be hard for a majority of them because they find it disgusting.
That part of the book was the hardest to digest because we all grew up knowing that everyone is different. In the book they force similarities amongst everyone, unless of course they are in a certain group. Wether it be alpha, betta, gamma, or delta. Not being the same as everyone else is what makes us unique and special in our own little way.

  2. Once I began reading this book I was also quite shocked in how the majority of the population in this utopian world were made in test tubes. Reading the part where the babies were being modified in the test tubes made me think about Designer babies. Designer babies are screened during their embryonic stage to check for any harmful genes. Furthermore, once a harmful gene is found (such as a cancer causing gene) it is then removed. I believe parents are significant factors in a child's life. Parents bring up and raise children to learn how to live and deal with issues. Parents also have the strongest influence in a child's life that could determine their future. I disapprove in the ways of the D.H.C, because I don't like how he is essentially getting rid of creativity among the babies.

  3. I believe parents are a significant factor in human life since that's all we as humans really know of. We are so depended on our parents for pretty much every aspect of our life. It's a lot different when it comes to talking about other species like spiders or turtles. Both species must learn to fend for themselves right away in order to ensure their own survival, since no one is there to help them.

  4. I'm sure that to many teenagers, the idea of not having parents sounds great. No one would boss them around and constantly snoop into their privacy. However, I do think this book takes this issue to an extreme. To completely abolish parents? I believe parents play a vital role in their children's lives to guide them in life and teach them good morals. The society sees parenting a problem because it claims that a person should not feel strongly about anything including parental affairs. Personally, I think this is horrible because the society takes away a natural right of mammals to have parents.
