Procrastination at Its Finest

Whenever I go to Walmart or Target these days I have come to the point where I avoid walking past the section where they are selling Back to School items.  This avoidance comes from the stress that has occurred because of the procrastination I have done this summer.

From the day summer started to now, I’m pretty sure many of us have given in to this evil thing called procrastination.  I always ask myself, how do other people find the motivation to do things so early?
I can’t deny the fact that I have succumbed to it so many times over the course of how many school nights I’ve spent struggling to finish a project, assignment or an art piece the day before it was due.  Procrastinating is a hard thing to avoid for us students, especially if the due date is so far away.  Instead of making it easier for myself, I constantly give way to more things that I find much more entertaining than finishing an assignment.  At the end of the day I regret the many days i had that were spent on unnecessary things.  What are your thoughts on this?   What motivates you to not procrastinate?  Have you procrastinated this summer?

  1. I think everyone has experienced procrastination in some form. I try to not procrastinate on some things because I know the hard work I must put into it. Other things I procrastinate on are because I know I can finish it fast. I try to avoid proractinating by thinking that if I get this one assignment done early, I will have more free time instead of having to stress about it.

  2. I agree everyone in their life, I feel, has procrastinated. I believe some people are better at handling procrastination than others. I, on the other hand, am not good at handling procrastination. There have been several times where I have started on a project two days before it's due. While procrastinating, I came across this Ted Talk that really was fascinating. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arj7oStGLkU Tim Urban made some really good points about procrastination.

I have procrastinated this summer. However, I have made it a rule that if I touch any form of homework (i.e. books, rubrics, etc) I have to start on it right away. I think this technique helps me take control of my bad habit of procrastination. I kind of go into auto-pilot, and I end up finishing a whole assignment this way.

  3. I agree with you, it is very hard not to procrastinate especially on summer homework because there is no school so there are so many fun things to do other than homework. I have to admit that I have procrastinated this summer there were some days that I had absolutely nothing planned which was perfect to start my summer homework but instead I chose to watch Netflix all day. I think that the main thing that helps me to not procrastinate is thinking about how much stress I have been under previously from procrastinating on projects. This helps me because I would never like to be under that kind of stress again.

  4. I feel this blog was very much needed. Yes! Someone who speaks for us procrastinators! I know i shouldn't express my excitement for being a lazy person, but its what I am. I tell myself everyday that today will be the day I will be productive, but my bed looks at me with such seductive eyes and invites me to stay a while longer and binge watch TV shows. How could I possibly say no to that? Of course, this has lead to me trying to cram all my summer homework into these last weeks, spending many sleepless nights. However, the question remains; was it worth it?

    A little.

  5. I agree with you. I feel like everyone has procrastinated on something at least once in their lifetime. I procrastinate because I choose to do other things I enjoy doing first, such as watching shows on Netflix. As of right now, my system is that if I complete a certain amount of work, I can have a certain amount of time to watch shows; this is what's keeping me from waiting until the very last minute to do all of my summer homework.

    1. I agree with you. For many procrastinating is easy to avoid, and with others its hard to focus and not procrastinate. For example, I've procrastinated from doing most of my AP work because I'd rather do some of the things I enjoy like watching TV shows or spend my time on social media. Although I've procrastinated, I've still been able to manage my time and set aside a few hours to finish some of the tasks at hand. I feel as though everyone has procrastinated at least once in their lives, it all comes down to whether you can accomplish your task fully and on time.

  6. I agree with your statement about how hard it is to avoid procrastination. The saying, " history repeats itself " can relate to procrastination. For example, many have stayed up late to finish what they have put off, they always say that next time they will do their work on time. So many people are stuck in the endless cycle of procrastination trying to find a way out. What motivates me to not to procrastinate is the feeling of accomplishment when I have finished my work. Yet, I still find ways to procrastinate.

    1. I entirely agree with you Tania when you say "history repeats itself". After I procrastinate on an assignment I tell myself that I will not do it again. Yet a majority of the time I find myself pressing to finish a project as the due date approaches

  7. Honestly, is there a high school student out there who cannot agree to this? There are some moments though when I actually don't procrastinate and do my work days before the due date. These times, I find myself filled with pride. But, we all know the feeling of procrastinating for a big project, doing it the night before, and getting a good grade. I feel like this is what pushes us to procrastinate even more.

    1. You're right, Cheyanne. It feels so good to finish a project or an essay early so you can just relax and wait for the due date. I don't always procrastinate depending on the complexity of the assignment. However, when I do procrastinate, it's probably because I assume I'm still going to get an "A" because it seems like that happens to me a lot.

  8. I can definitely concur with Margareth because procrastination is a terrible habit that most students, including myself, fight to avoid but cannot because it is like clockwork. Speaking for myself, it is very difficult for me to end this horrible cycle because in my mind, I believe that I have a alot of time to complete the work that needs to be done and then regret not working on it sooner. I think this phenomenon is bad but I end up doing better under pressure. I think its the idea of pouring your brain out in one sitting because for me, completing assignments piece by piece, I forget what I was trying to say and dont give my full thought and effort into the assignment/project. Although, my reasoning does contradict itself because when im working on an art project It is much more beneficial to begin on the project the day it is assigned because in art, the key is taking everything in stride. My point is that it all depends on the assignment given, but procrastination can be conqured by taking our schoolwork in stride and to start the assignments ASAP. Most of the assignments are manageable, it is just us fighting our inner demons.

  9. Procrastination is a disease that plagues the majority of students. Many people procrastinate because they discover something more entertaining than completing an assignment. As a part-time procrastinator, it becomes very stressful under the pressure of a project or other assignment. A bright spot of procrastination is it allows students to practice working under pressure. Ironically, it also teaches students time management skills by forcing them to work under a short time limit.

The one thing that forces me to work on assignments early and avoid procrastinating is my grade. I try to do my best in school because I want to have a successful, fun, and luxurious life after high school.

My answer to your last question is simple: Yes! I've been caught up with Driver's Education and various summer vacation plans. However, I haven't procrastinated too much. This comment makes me have one post and six comments!
