As I finished reading the Room for Debate article, “Should
Guns be permitted on college campuses”, I began to wonder if high school teachers
should be allowed to carry handguns during class hours to possibly decrease the
amount of school shootings in our country.
I admire the rule of allowing college professors to carry weapons as a
way of protection with the increasing amount of school shootings and deaths of innocent
students who had no way to protect themselves.
This makes me believe that the next step of preventing any future school
shootings should be training High School teachers to shoot guns in case High
Schools become the new targets for shooters.
I understand certain students would not feel the same amount of
protection as I would if teachers were allowed to carry guns, but they have to
think about the amount of teachers who will try their best to protect everyone from
death compared to the amount of school shooters that kill
children. I really want your guy’s
opinions on allowing our teachers to hold pistols, as I am very
interested to see everyone’s opinion.
I feel as if allowing teachers to hold guns is telling students that it's okay to have school shooting because either way I will be able to defend myself and others. I think the problem is not having to train teachers and staff to use a gun, but to stop having shootings. We need to prevent all these things from happening but how will we do that? Is it changing the second amendment of the constitution? Or is it changing the way people look at guns as a matter of safety and not destruction?
ReplyDeleteFor teachers to carry guns, it will end up causing even more school shootings. For example, if a teacher is really angry at a student, they might not be able to control their rage and take out their gun and shoot the student. This could easily even be used as a threat to get students to actually work. The only way to protect people from these weapons is to completely ban all guns on any scale because they are too dangerous. We as a human race point these guns at each other, so how do you stop this? Take away these guns from the people and only use these weapons when they are truly needed for something.
ReplyDeleteI believe that allowing teachers to carry weapons in school says a lot about our society's school. What I mean by that is that what it says is not even schools are safe anymore. If teacher have to carry guns at school to protect others, in my opinion that shows that a student can't even go to school without worrying about whether or not someone will come in with a gun to kill them. To me, it has gotten so bad that teachers have to carry guns. However, I believe that maybe if teachers did carry guns it would probably save some lives if a school shooting were to happen. That is, as long as the teacher uses the gun properly.
ReplyDeleteLawrence said exactly what I was thinking, in terms of teachers carrying guns. At the end of the day they are still humans who may have a mental issue. If a student were to be interrupting class and being a nuisance, who's to say the teacher wouldn't react in a detrimental manner. I personally wouldn't feel any safer if my teacher were to carry gun. Besides if teachers were allowed to carry guns I think students will feel like it's okay for them to do the same. Also, you can't just take away everyone's fire arm because not everyone is reckless with it. Needless to say, gun control is a very debatable subject.
ReplyDeleteTeachers should not have to be completely responsible for their students' protection. Training to use and carry a gun should not be a part of their job description.
ReplyDeleteInstead, security guards should be trained to use and carry firearms during school hours. If they were no weapons allowed on school campuses, then schools would become vulnerable targets.
However, if a teacher or staff member wanted to carry a firearm for their own protection during school hours, they should be able to. Gun laws would restrict people with mental issues from obtaining a gun. This means that those with guns would not use them irrationally against rude students.
If we try to solve the school shootings by trying to change our whole system and remove the right to bear arms, it will take years to be fully in effect. However, humans are not all brainless zombies that follow all the rules government commands, we are stubborn and we revolt for the things we want. Even if we are put under a microscope for full surveillance, people will always find a way to do something. In the end, I don't entirely agree that we should train our teachers to wield a gun for protection; as some of you have said; teachers are humans, and they can make mistakes.
ReplyDeleteI think that teachers should not be allowed to carry guns at school. Although some students may feel safer with teachers carrying guns others may feel like they are in more danger if their teacher is carrying a gun. In my opinion there are benefits and risks to teachers carrying a gun. A benefit is that they can protect us if there is a school shooting. However, a risk is that the teacher can get mad and shoot a student. Another risk is that a student might get a hold of a teacher's gun and lead to a tragedy. Even though shootings are more heard of no I don't believe that teachers should carry a gun on a daily basis.
