Guns Allowed on College Campuses?

Another article that I encountered on "Room for Debate" asked if guns should be allowed on college campuses. Starting this summer,Tennessee will allow faculty and staff to carry weapons on college campuses. Surprisingly, Tennessee isn't the only state allowing weapons. Texas and eight other states have already done this. They did this to ensure the safety of students. They believe that students can prevent a crime when armed. However, what happens when there is a debate in the classroom and two students disagree on something? It can become chaotic. In the heat of the moment, something terrible could happen to either one of them. Students would be forced to hold back their opinions because of the presence of guns. Guns are a high risk to have in any situation, especially in a school. What do you think of this situation?

  1. So, these schools want to ensure safety by allowing students and faculty to carry dangerous weapons? It just contradicts itself. I believe schools should just make safety precautions stricter, making it almost impossible to bring a weapon on their campus in the first place. Allowing anyone to walk around a very populated place, like a school campus, with a gun in his or her pocket is just completely careless, making shootings more likely to happen. Schools should focus on how to make their campuses an overall safer place and I don't find adding guns to that makes that possible.

  3. Allowing faculty to carry weapons on college campuses may partially be the answer. But that probably will not stop some crazy person from shooting up the school. This might just complicate things because the faculty or staff member may be the crazy one plotting on killing people on campus and allowing them to wield them only makes it easier to commit such heinous crimes. The best thing would probably make the weapons allowed non-lethal.

  4. Guns should not be allowed on a college campus at all. When you allow guns on campus that puts so much more people at risk. If something were to happen on campus it would be very hard to figure out who actually did it because everyone would have a gun. I understand that people want to be safe but that isn't the right weapon to do it. The only weapon Thant should be allowed is a very small pocket knife with restriction on how small or big it can be. Other than that any other weapon is not self defense it is just plain dangerous.
