While I was on Room for Debate recently I came across an article called "Guns on Campus Makes Colleges Less Safe" and looking at the title you can tell it is about guns. We have heard of many tragedies recently happening all over the world and some of them having to do with gun violence. Lately it has been difficult to go on the internet without hearing about a tragedy that is happening in some part of the world. In this article, they discuss a law that allows licensed holders to carry concealed guns in university buildings and classrooms. This law will officially go into effect on August 1, 2016 for Texas public colleges and universities. In a way I feel that it is good that some students will be allowed to carry guns on campus to protect themselves and protect those around them, but there are also negative effects to this law.
Guns would supposedly make the environment more safe, but I personally would feel even more scared. How would I be expected to go to school and sit in a classroom where someone next to me could be carrying a gun? At any moment that person could use their gun for a wrong reason. Also, when it came down to it and someone were to come into the school and start shooting students or staff would those holding guns be able to actually shoot that person? Having a gun is different from actually using it because you could take someone else's life. Personally for me I am scared to hold a gun and if the time came that I had to use one I would not be able to use it. It is really upsetting that we have to make laws such as this one just because school shootings have happened and gun violence has become a thing we are used to. How would you guys feel if colleges here in California allowed students to carry guns? Would you be comfortable knowing some of your family members or friends could be attending those colleges?
Personally I believe that guns should not be used by civilians. I understand that people may want them for their own protection, but if no one had guns their would be less injuries/deaths. Our world is already dangerous enough with others using bombs and other deadly weapons, when guns are added to this it cause and increase of deaths.
ReplyDeleteI personally would not feel safe if i looked over and saw a classmate with a gun. We already have the issue of students going on to campuses with guns hurting fellow classmates and teachers, so why should we make it easier for them to do so.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you Jenica, I too would feel nervous and scared to know that the person sitting next to me in the same room has a gun. Though I believe in the safety of students in their our learning environment, i do not support allowing students to carry a deadly weapon.
ReplyDeleteExpanding upon Itzel's fear, I believe that everyone will be self-conscious of each other because of the guns that they (all) hold. I think that if someone were to have a disagreement with a fellow classmate, they would instinctively reach for their gun, as they stated that it "made them feel comfortable" having a gun beside them. Also, as I mentioned in another post, guns should NOT be allowed on campus, as it is a place of knowledge, not violence.
DeleteThat being said, having this gun law has its pros and cons. Allowing everyone to own a gun will scare any malicious outsiders. Consequently, the students constantly put themselves in danger of each other, as they now have the power to end a life with one tap.
I do not agree with the passing of this law at all. I would not feel safe coming to school and sitting in the same classroom as someone who has a gun in their bag. What people do not understand is that any little thing can make someone angry and pull out this gun and take anyone's life just like that. You never know when that may happen so who would feel comfortable in school at all knowing that their life may end when class starts? Are we trying to increase the number of deaths now? It's already a lot going on in the world today with gun violence. I really don't like that it has to come down to this unruly law. To sum it up, I do not support allowing students to walk around with a gun. I personally do not enjoy seeing people on the news dead from gun violence.
ReplyDeleteI believe that we should have gun laws, but not super strict. If you haven't noticed yet, but Texas, has the most lenient gun laws is one of the most peaceful states. Everyone in Texas has a gun. But if you look in Chicago, Illinois, the murder capital of the world, has the harshest gun restrictions. I think we in California must find a median, between harsh and lenient gun restrictions. I personally believe most of the population must have a weapon in their household, after harsh requirements of course. I also think that students should not have a gun and only adults over the age of 28.
ReplyDeleteGuns and schools should never come in hand to hand. Personally, I wouldn't feel safe around a student with a gun, even if it was for self-defense. Instead of allowing students to carry guns, they should make it so that only security on school campuses can.
