Social Media Threats
As I was scrolling through Room for Debate, I clicked on an article called "How to Crack Down on Social Media Threats." Now I have never been a personal victim of online harassment, but I know it's a pretty relevant topic since social media plays such a huge role in today's society. Reading this article really made me think more seriously on the topic. I always thought many of these "attackers" online were just internet trolls wanting to get some likes and replies, who don't really want to cause any harm. "Attackers feel comfortable making hateful comments because cloaks of anonymity protect them," Ari Waldman says, which I find to be true. To relate to something we all know, the ogle app was all anonymous, making users not afraid of posting anything. Social media threats, due to its anonymity, are getting harder to track down and deal with. I know the simple answer to this is "block or report them!" or "maybe they shouldn't be on the internet," but I want different answers. Shouldn't everyone be able to enjoy the internet without being afraid of being harassed or fear for their safety? Even if you do block someone, they can create another account. Should people take cyber harassment more seriously? We all find entertainment when someone roasts a person on Twitter as a joke, but when does it go too far? How did we get to this point in time where negativity is to be taken as a "joke?" Not everyone is going to take my argument very seriously, but I believe online threats should be taken a little bit more seriously. We were all taught the saying "think before you speak." Well there should be a new saying for this generation, "think before you tweet."

I totally agree with you Cheyanne about negativity being taken as a joke today. When I hang out with some people I notice they find the most unpleasant topics very amusing, even hilarious! This would include a ridiculous photo, a vine or a video on YouTube. I think much negativity today is taken as a joke because modern media treats many unusual images as a joke even if it's unintended to be funny. For example, Instagram has various accounts that post videos of people doing ridiculous acts. Most of the time people are making mistakes that they intentionally didn't plan to do. Yet this is what we find amusing on the media and we take it as a joke because it's amusing. Today's entertainment on media influences our reactions to certain acts that we wouldn't be laughing at before.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that I'm not the only one noticing negativity taken humorously! I agree with what you have to say about things that shouldn't be funny, but are viewed as a joke. I see it all the time on Twitter and Instagram. I also notice violence becoming entertainment as well. It's kind of scary thinking where this could be heading next. I believe our "entertainment" seems to be going down hill.
